If (heaven forbid) the project fails to be commercially viable, they could find themselves going from the position of most loved people on campus to most hated in a single year having spent £500,000 of the union's, numerous donors' and our money.
The Courtyard is undeniably a fantastic venue. Well designed, well finished and well thought out. That said some of my main concerns indeed stem from the fashionable design and high quality of finish. Will the union be able to afford to maintain this level of design as fashions change and the venue becomes more dilapidated as the VKs and vomit hit home? In going for such an avant garde design, the union has made a bold choice: the more fashionable the design, the quicker it goes out of date. It can even be out of date before it's finished: the new-look Tru, with its blue LEDs and chrome everywhere, looks more like a chavved-up Citroën Saxo than a nightclub.

The first term is the biggest test for the new venue. The union will have to work hard to establish the brand, build up a reputation - the right reputation - and host great night after great night in order to do this. We've all seen that once a bar starts failing, it's a downward spiral until someone kicks up a fuss and proposes to close it. There's no denying that Matt Burton, Rory Shanks et al have a lot of work on their hands to achieve what they need to.
After 45 years of waiting for our own bar, it is as much our responsibility to ensure that this is a success as it is theirs.
But after 45 years of waiting for our own bar, it is as much our responsibility to ensure that this is a success as it is theirs – not just for ourselves but for future students too. Even if there had been no renovation, I would be 100% behind it. We are way behind other universities when it comes to student-run facilities such as this and if it were to die before it even got started, we’d be in a much worse position. Whilst it is important to be loyal to your college bar, it is in many ways more important to support the bar that we own: through thick and thin.
At the moment its surrounded by hype. I know a lot of people are planning to kickstart the Tru/Gallery nights there, and also most people seem to be saying "oooh, we'll go there every Saturday".
It's a case of how it goes really, it's a very smart bar, and has a real upmarket Weatherspoons feel about it. Not sure how it works in terms of club nights, but I reckon it'll be a big success and will rival Derwent, Vanbrugh and McQ's over the next few years before Hes East!
'upmarket Weatherspoons feel about it'
...isn't this a contradiction in terms?
I think that there is a stark contrast between Posterngate and some of the other 'spoons I've visited across the country... so no
How did the Saturday night event go? Sell-out?
