The show is due to be performed in week 5 and we are all beginning to feel the pressure. This weekend we have spent a lot of time dealing with all of the transitions within the show. This involves organising where and when people enter the stage and exit, as well as how they move around. As you can imagine this is a time consuming task, but it is this kind of attention to detail that really makes a show look professional.
As choreographer it is my responsibility to create the dances and teach them to the company. I absolutely love this role but it is not without its stresses. I am a total perfectionist and will not accept anything unless it is as good as it can possibly be. I try and make my rehearsals fun, but there is absolutely nothing fun about 9am on a Sunday morning! We rehearse early in the morning until late at night in order to make the show as slick and professional as possible.
I am incredibly lucky to work with such a talented and dedicated production team and cast. I know I can count on them to make the show look and sound incredible. Some of the songs in RENT require solo dance numbers and I have been working closely with Josh Fisher, who plays the character of Angel, in order to perfect his routine: which is guaranteed to be incredible. I have also enjoyed working with Janey Stephenson who plays the dark, sexy and complex character of Mimi Marquez. She brings energy to the role and is great fun to be around.
My favourite thing about this show is the music; the songs are beautiful and our MD James Ball has done an incredible job teaching the cast. Some of the songs in RENT make you laugh and others make you want to cry. The music is incredibly diverse. I am always blown away by the solos in 'Seasons of Love', probably the most iconic song from the show. Many of you may have seen last year's production of the Full Monty; if so you will recognise some familiar faces returning to the stage. However, we have some incredibly talented first years in our cast as well, who I hope will continue to perform with CHMS in the future. Look out for the next entry to the RENT blog soon. With the production only a couple of weeks away, there is guaranteed to be more news coming your way. Tickets are on sale now online at www.yusu.org and at Your:Shop.
