The last YUSU comedy night of this academic year heralded a change of venue, as regular compere Dan Nightingale took the reins as the main headliner, and was excellently supported by Pappy’s Fun Club.
It has to be said that the turnout in the Vanbrugh 'dining hall' wasn’t great, presumably owing to end of year exams. We were more than a little apprehensive that pins would be heard dropping throughout the performance. Before he got going, Dan Nightingale had to entice the audience into confronting their comedy night fears and moving forward.
The four guys charismatically delivered a fantastic display of very original set-piece comedy.
However, he soon got into his comedic stride, made easier by a noticeably more relaxed audience than usual. It was nice to be able to watch him performing, without him needing to resort to the tried-and-tested formula of jokes about ducks, pre-fabricated concrete or York St. John. He was largely showcasing his Edinburgh Fringe material, which involved personal anecdotes, combined with witty observations and a healthy dollop of innuendo, all of which went down a treat.
Pappy’s Fun Club thoroughly entertained for the second half of the show in a markedly different vein to the usual stand-up acts. The four guys charismatically delivered a fantastic display of very original set-piece comedy. Some of the sketches included: a knowledge-off between a wise owl and the internet, a Jeremy Beadle-esque prankster and improvised songs done in the style of Whose Line is it Anyway?. When picking names from the audience, they were confronted with finding a rhyme for ‘Anne-Marie’. No prizes for guessing whom they picked on.
It made a nice change to see some ‘old school’ comedy, proving that it still has the ability to make us laugh, as well as highlighting the scope for variety that the YUSU comedy nights actually have.
