Dancing Shoes

Strictly Come Dancing is sweeping the nation, and for what else were Saturday and Sunday nights invented for? But why is lifesaver concerned with glitz, glamour and show stopping moves? Well, aside from being ridiculously fun, dancing is an excellent way to keep fit. Simple fact is that dancing makes you feel good, especially after a few cheeky drinks, but it’s also good for your body.

Experts say dancing boosts energy, improves circulation and tones muscles. It can help relieve tension and stress, and improve your mood. What’s more it helps burn those nasty calories. Depending on your weight, and how crazy you go at this whole dancing malarkey, in just half an hour you can burn between 120 and 300 calories. Not bad I would say. On top of this dancing is undeniably cheap. You just need your body and a willingness to have fun and you’re ready to rock and roll baby.

If dancing around your room with a hairbrush or gliding across the kitchen floor doing the electric slide is not enough for you, then where can you go in York to dance, dance, dance? After trying my hand, or should I say my feet, at a little salsa I would highly recommend it. Head to downtown York’s very own Latin bar, Bobo Lobo, which holds dance classes on Tuesday nights at 7pm, and add a little salsa to your life.

For more learning fun, conducting a spot of research I found the University’s dance society is the place to be, with over 800 members. There’s something for everyone, whether you fancy street, salsa, jazz, break, jive or tap. Membership is a rather reasonable £3.50 and classes thereafter are £2.50, with salsa £3.00. Got you thinking? Well check out their website for times, and you’ll be on Strictly Come Dancing before you know it!

If, like me, your only form of exercise is hitting the dance floors of York, then groovy! Indeed York may be small, but after a few cocktails or trebles ‘we’re gonna party like it’s 1999.’ If you’re into your hairbrush hits and a bit of kinky indie then Toffs is your man. For some grinding R n B, dance, chart and party, plus indie funk and electronica then Gallery it up. Or, for a house party complete with tunes you’ve not heard since you were sixteen then ziggys has got it going on.

Multi task. Attend a dance class and then you can whip out those smooth moves on a night out, oh how impressed your friends will be! If you love all things indie then head to Fibbers on a Friday for their wondrous club night. Don the big hair, admit you’re an indie cindy and I bet you’ll look good on the dancefloor! Or, for something a little heavier get down to Certificate 18 for some head banging fun. Remember, it’s all in the name of fitness!

As the middle of term approaches you should all have fought off freshers flu and be full of energy, so get dancing before end of term fatigue sets in. For all those movers, groovers and shakers out there, who needs expensive gym membership? Dust off your dancing shoes and shimmy your way into a fitter you!

Maybz you should just eat less cake to get fit, not dance like.

You might lose weight by eating less cake, but doesn't mean you'll be fit...

I like cake and dancing (although not at the same time).

I am the winner.
