So if you don’t fancy deliberating between white, yellow and pink (not even sure I want to know what flavour that’s meant to be) again this week then join Lifesaver this week and have a go at a packed lunch.
Now this might all seem a little bit primary school but the benefits are considerable, not least the pennies you’ll save. And with a little forward planning and some numbers to crunch you’ll be able to save yourself a few calories too.
Now your sandwich might be a little impractical without bread but that doesn’t mean you don’t have choice. Brown bread has fewer calories than white, about 85 to 75 if you’re interested, although granary bread wins out with 60 calories per slice. What's more, as we all know deep down, brown bread is just better for you. The whole grains found in wholemeal bread contain fibre, antioxidants, iron, magnesium, zinc and B vitamins.
Onwards to the filling then, clearly this would be a rather long column if we started on some sort of sandwich cataloguing mission so I’m just going to have a rough go at the calorie count of a few classic sandwiches before we see what a couple of less conventional options bring to the table.
If we’re looking at improving your usual sarnie, cheese salad is a prime candidate. Let’s face it, no matter how long into the distant past the last supermarket shop was, chances are you’ve got some cheese in the fridge somewhere (even if you do have to cut the mould off the edges first). The bad news is that cheddar is pretty calorific, about 170 calories in a sandwich sized portion, cream cheese (admittedly the low fat version) is considerably slimmer at only around 70 calories.
Feta comes in at around 100 calories and camembert (119) and Brie (128) start to push it a little. Seeing as lettuce is over 90% water it seems a little silly to get into the number of calories per leaf (it’s less than 1), chuck some in and embrace the crunch as well as the vitamins.

A quick note on the above numbers: mayo seems to be the sandwich demon: with normal mayonnaise adding 100 calories low fat seems by far the better option at only 50. Even better just leave it out of tuna and why not go for egg and cress rather than mayo to lose that unnecessary 100.
Now if you’re up for a bit of sandwich adventure but don’t want to pay for it on the hips then, according to my calculations a brie, olive, and rocket sandwich would weigh in at 235 calories; a little bit of shopping effort might just be worth it for a lunch as good as that. On the other hand if planned shopping isn’t your thing then one of my favourite sandwiches is a classic banana; minimum effort and just 240 calories.
The upshot of all this is that if you get really good at the sandwich making you could even open your own deli, or get a lunch box with Disney characters on it like you had for your packed lunch back in the day. Then again… there’s always Browns…
