Vantage Point - Friday Week 8
The President of the United States arrives in Spain for talks to fight global terrorism; as he walks on stage at an outdoor press conference, surrounded by a cheering crowd, he is shot down by an unknown gunman. The proceedings are thrown into chaos; while Secret Service agents race to discover the anonymous attacker. We re-live this thrilling and tense 23 minute scene through the eyes of six crucial eyewitnesses, each with vital information. Tension, intensity and creativity are both at boiling point overflowing in an exhilarating finale.
In Bruges - Monday Week 9
In Martin McDonagh’s debut feature film, we see two hit men (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) hiding out in Bruges after a hit went bad. The gothic architecture, canals and cobbled streets of the beautiful city offer the ideal backdrop to this backer-than-black comedy. Farrell is on a new found and sublime form and Gleeson is once again solidly brilliant. As their experiences become more surreal, we see the arrival of Harry (a superb Ralph Fiennes) as we reach an emotional, comically tragic and heart-warming climax. A laugh out loud and also a poignant portrayal of humanity at is core makes In Bruges a film not to be missed.
Iron Man - Friday Week 9
The final outing for York Student Cinema is the blockbuster Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr is on fire as billionaire Tony Stark. After he is ambushed and kidnapped by a terrorist cell in Afghanistan, he designs an impenetrable suit of armour in order to escape. Once home, he sees the error in his ways as an arms manufacturer and perfects his suit in order to make things right. Iron Man is well above the standard of recent superhero film outings: an intelligent script, impressive cast and great special effects. YSC are ending the year with a bang.
