After the explosive start of Quantum of Solace, Week 2 sees The Duchess and Pineapple Express grace the screen.
The Duchess – Monday, Week 2
In Keira Knightley’s most impressive role to date, The Duchess tells the story of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Georgiana leads a lavish life: she is married to an immensely rich and influential man, she lives in a grand estate, attends parties, and has a reputation for her beauty, wit and intelligence. She, however, does not love her husband (played with ease by the ever charismatic Ralph Fiennes) and is quickly subjected to one role. She must produce a male heir. Increasingly frustrated, Georgiana becomes active in many other activities. The main one being that she becomes involved in political actions of the Liberal Party. There she meets Charles Grey (Gary Cooper) and she finally discovers the meaning of love. A well acted and crafted piece, The Duchess is an extremely poignant film. It is not difficult to see such similarities between the life of Georgiana and the life of her descendent, Princess Diana.
Pineapple Express – Thursday, Week 2
Dale is a reckless and likeable stoner. He lives a life lacking anything too dangerous or out of the ordinary, but all that changes when he witnesses a murder. If that was not bad enough, though, Dale leaves drugs at the scene of the crime and he along with his dealer are soon in more trouble than they can imagine. Seth Rogen is back in a role he is very familiar with and is joined by James Franco as the longhaired waster dealer Saul. Full of what you would expect, stoner-gags, toilet humour and incoherent drawl, Pineapple Express also gives you so much more. The pace is quick and offers some great action sequences. From the writers of Superbad, Pineapple Express has a lot going for it and is definitely worth a watch.
York Student Cinema is in PX/001 and tickets are a mere £3. Doors open at 6.45 and the showing starts at 7.30
