Tropic Thunder – Friday, Week 4
An all-star cast and a production that has been in the making for over a decade, Stiller’s Tropic Thunder promises to be something special. While trying to film a Vietnam epic director Damien Cockburn (the inimitable Steve Coogan) throws his actors in to the real jungle to shake up his cast. It all, who would have guessed, goes wrong when the cast and crew find themselves chased by heroin dealers. Stiller and Jack Black are fantastic as egotistical B-movie stars but the stand out performance is undoubtedly from Robert Downey Jr., who controversially blacked up for the role. A laugh out loud action movie, and certainly one to watch.
Some Like it Hot – Sunday, Week 5
Marilyn Monroe as the stunning Sugar Kane; Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon as the unforgettable Joe and Jerry; gangsters, cross dressing and a script by Billy Wilder. What more can there be? Our duo witnesses a mob assassination so are on the run for their lives. They take up positions in a band heading for Florida; an all girl band. So Joe and Jerry become Josephine and Daphne and one of the greatest comedies ever is under way. Wilder’s mastery of scriptwriting is obvious from the off in this classic (which has, to my mind, the best last line for a film ever) and stellar performances make Some Like it Hot as must-see for all.
The Baader Meinhof Complex – Monday, Week 5
The Baader-Meinhof Group terrorised Germany in the 1970s, and Uri Edel’s film portrays the people behind the mayhem with unexpected but poignant compassion. We see how the fight against terrorism is more than capturing individuals but is a battle against the spread of ideologies and radicalisation. It does not glorify the actions of Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof (played with striking sensitivity by Martina Gedeck and Moritz Bleibtreu) but considers issues of why people are radicalised and presents a time in German history where murder was far too evident in society.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno – Thursday, Week 5
Kevin Smith (of Clerks and Dogma fame) is known for being a raw and unremitting director when it comes to lewdness and innuendo. His latest is no different. Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are in desperate need for money and the only solution they find is to make a porn film starring themselves. The true test of this venture, however, is not whether they will raise the money but if Zack and Miri’s friendship can stand the awkwardness of shooting the... shall we say more intimate scenes. Rogen carries on to do what he does best with ease and charm, while Banks is the perfect Miri: looking a bit too innocent to be believed!
As ever, YSC is in PX/001 and the film starts at 7.30. Tickets are only £3!
