James Absolon explains how this Pope-themed film, despite its risky premise, works
Alex Pollard reviews Hollywood's biopic of the controversial Margaret Thatcher
Wow, this icy weather really doesn’t want to shift does it? It’s at times like this that a little bit of escapism is really and truly appreciated. Week 6 at the York Student Cinema is offering this commodity by the bowlful, so whether you want to visit somewhere fantastical (Where The Wild Things Are) or downright gritty (Harry Brown) we’ve got you covered.
That’s right: it is the second of this legendary trilogy back on the big screen where it belongs. Highlights of this film include the Battle at Helms Deep, the March of the Ents and the true appearance of Gollum as a major character. So even if you missed The Fellowship Of The Ring when it was shown back in Week 4 there are still many reasons to come and see this classic.
Michael Caine truly shines in his role as the eponymous Harry Brown, a veteran who decides to take a role as a local vigilante after a friend of his is murdered due to the rise in local youth crime. It is sad to say that Caine’s amazing performance has been cruelly overlooked this season, but here it is in its true glory this Thursday.
That’s right, this beloved children’s classic has been adapted for the big screen and has been with such love that it cannot help but capture your heart. With both fantastically executed renderings of the beasts from those illustrations that we all fell for, as well as a fantastic score from Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this film reaped much critical acclaim for both Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) as director and the darker tone of the screenplay is truly the week’s highlight.
York Student Cinema is in PX/001 and the doors open at 18:45. Tickets are only £3!
