James Absolon explains how this Pope-themed film, despite its risky premise, works
Alex Pollard reviews Hollywood's biopic of the controversial Margaret Thatcher
Releases: This week sees two rather large releases making their way to the big screens. The first of these is Tim Burton’s long awaited adaptation of Alice In Wonderland featuring favourites Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter alongside Mia Wasikowska (Defiance) portraying Alice. With lush set pieces and fantastical costuming this is set to be a real visual treat.
Also out is Oscar-nominated film Crazy Heart where we Brits will finally get a chance to see Jeff Bridges in the role that has been earning him plaudits from every major award ceremony; same with Maggie Gyllenhaal who earned her first Oscar nomination for her role.
News: Anyone hoping for a sequel for bullet-bending film Wanted will be unhappy to hear that Angelina Jolie has pulled out of the film in order to pursue other projects. Also Transformers 3 appears to be well and truly on its way with shooting starting in a few months… heaven help us.
Awards: This week sees Oscar-fever truly hit its peak with the coveted balding golden figurines being handed out next Sunday. A week ago saw the handing out of the BAFTAs with The Hurt Locker scooping Best Film, Best Director and four other awards. Look out for the Oscars live-blog to be kept up to speed with all the action in Tinsel Town.
News: It has been announced that David Tennant will star in Single Father, a four part drama for the BBC about a widower coping with his wife’s death and the difficulties of bringing up his children alone, while Rufus Sewell will star as Aurelio Zen in three feature length episodes about the Italian detective, based on the novels of Michael Dibdin. It’s also looking increasingly likely that the new series of Doctor Who will premiere on Saturday 3rd April.
It’s been a great week for Glee – not only was Glee The Music Volume 1 number one on our charts, but the cast was reportedly invited to perform at the White House in April, as Michelle and the Obama girls are big fans of the show. I guess Gleeks are in good company.
Listings Highlights: Being Human finished on Sunday on BBC3, so now really is the time to search it out on iPlayer if you haven’t done so already; a third series has been confirmed and will see the programme move to Cardiff. In EastEnders, Bradley’s funeral is due to air on Friday at 8pm on BBC1. For fans of David Brent’s yankee counterpart, check out season 4 of The Office: An American Workplace this week (Mon 8pm, ITV4).
New Series: Following a successful first run in 2007 and a spin-off with the marvellous Hugh Bonneville, Five Days airs at 9pm every weeknight this week on BBC1 starring Surranne Jones and the equally marvellous David Morrissey. Eddie Izzard: Marathon Man, a documentary on the comedian’s amazing feat of running 43 marathons in 51 days, begins on Thursday at 10.30pm on BBC3.
