Well the term is winding down to a close with this marking the final week of YSC showings. Week 9 once again brings a varied look at recent cinema with the sleeper hit Paranormal Activity, blockbuster Sherlock Holmes and the much nominated comedy It’s Complicated.
Nancy Meyers, the director of The Parent Trap, has accosted an all-star cast for her latest film It’s Complicated. With Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, John Krasinski (from the American incarnation of The Office) and Alec Baldwin all giving top performances it is little wonder that this film managed to gain a Golden Globe nomination for Best Movie – Musical or Comedy (alongside a Golden Globe nomination for Meryl Streep and a BAFTA nomination for Alec Baldwin). The film itself may not be complicated but it’s easy with its take on belly laughs and fun to become lost in the comic absurdities that unfold.
What has now become one of the most profitable feature films in cinema history (having made its $15,000 budget about 10,000 times over) gets its first showing at YSC. Paranormal Activity is a horror film which goes back to basics with good old-fashioned scares deriving from suspense and insinuation rather than gore and dismemberment. That is not to say that this is horror movie-lite. This is probably one of the scariest (actually scary) English language films released for a good while.
When designing a film schedule it is always a good idea to try and finish in style and Sherlock Holmes is the perfect way to finish off the term, with Robert Downey Jr. at his best as the eponymous hero of the Arthur Conan Doyle stories. With fantastic action and a sharp injection of comedy this goes to prove that Guy Ritchie is still able to make films like he used to and his climb back to the top is assured.
York Student Cinema is in PX/001 and the doors open at 18:45. Tickets are only £3!
