Up In The Air – Friday, Week 1
As a previous favourite in the race for Best Picture, Up in the Air marks one in a long line of successes for Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You For Smoking). With a great performance by George Clooney and many scene-stealing performances by supporting actress Anna Kendrick (Twilight), Up in the Air combines human drama, great comedic timing and a topical story that truly speaks.
Ponyo – Monday, Week 2
The latest film from Hayao Miyasaki, writer and director of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, sees a take on the classic fairytale The Little Mermaid. Critically acclaimed in both its native country and across the pond, Ponyo is a great example of an animated film that could never be shot in real life. With some of the most beautiful hand-drawn scenes and well rounded characters that rival the best of Western animation, Ponyo is a joy to behold.
Precious – Thursday, Week 2
Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire tells the story of the eponymous Precious (Gabourney Sidibe), a girl abused by her mother and pregnant with her second child after being raped by her father, when she is given a chance at education and happiness. With a stellar Oscar-winning performance from Mo’Nique as the abusive mother and a great performance from the whole ensemble this is a moving story.
Alice In Wonderland – Friday, Week 2
This newest entry in the Tim Burton canon is his take on Lewis Carroll’s children’s classic. By arming himself with a star-studded cast containing Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anne Hathaway and Michael Sheen, with a series of stunning visual effects he is able to breathe new life into this childhood favourite.
