Cemetery Junction

Cemetery Junction
Saturday, 1st May 2010

With Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant as its writers, a handful of very attractive up-and-coming actors as its stars - and Ralph Fiennes of course - Cemetery Junction was bound to be good.

Set in a notoriously rubbish town with a name that speaks for itself, the three lead characters - Cemetery Junction born and bred - each have their separate ambitions in life and each have their individual obstacles to overcome. There are some very funny lines - you'd expect no less from the house of Gervais-Merchant - for example: "Stop listening to music made by poofs! Stick on some Elton John". There are equally some outrageously rude lines that shan't be repeated here.

Just as The Office and Extras take on big taboos, Cemetery Junction goes back in time and beats down barefaced 1970s racism...literally beats it down...using several fight scenes. It's a very British film, with a refreshingly unglamorous setting - less the floppy-haired Hugh Grant-filled Four Weddings/Love Actually school, more of the touching Billy Elliot/Full Monty type.

For some reason it's been getting a lot of mixed reviews, but Cemetery Junction is a cool movie. Leather jackets, nights in jail cells, and a bunch of losers who come out on top. It's got it all, humour, romance, action...manly affections, inspiring speeches, fabulous outfits. Go see it!
