YSC Preview: Week 4

YSC Logo
Sunday, 16th May 2010
There is nothing like watching a film with a great leading performance, which is why Week 4 at YSC is Best Leading Actor Week. Containing both the BAFTA award winning performance by Colin Firth and the film that gave Jeff Bridges an Oscar on his fifth attempt, followed by the latest offering from Disney, this makes for one hell of a week.
  • A Single Man – Monday, Week 4

The directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford sees Colin Firth in his BAFTA award winning performance as the recently bereaved college professor George Falconer as he copes with the death of his life-partner. Following just one day in his life A Single Man is an incredibly moving and visually stunning story of loss with fantastic performances from Firth and perennial Oscar-loser Julianne Moore.

  • Crazy Heart – Thursday, Week 4

Country-singer Otis “Bad” Blake (Jeff Bridges) is not the man he used to be. Once a shining star of the county music circuit he has now been relegated to touring seedy motels as a means to support himself; that is, until he runs into journalist Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal). With a touching storyline and a smattering of catchy tunes, Crazy Heart is a prime example of perfectly executed Oscar-fodder, a rare mixture of worthiness and greatly accessible film making.

  • The Princess and The Frog – Friday, Week 4

For the first time since 2004, Disney return to traditional animation with their latest fairytale film The Princess and The Frog. The sheer quality of personnel involved in this film is astronomical with the same directors as The Little Mermaid and Hercules and featuring the music of Randy Newman (Toy Story, Monsters, Inc.). It is great to see Disney returning to the sorts of films that made them great, and may this be the beginning of a new Golden Age!

York Student Cinema is in P/X/001 (Physics) and the doors open at 18:45. Tickets are only £3!
