Releases: Greenberg, the latest film by the scriptwriter behind Fantastic Mr Fox, is released this week. Starring Ben Stiller in the lead role as the 40-year old Roger Greenberg, this film has been acclaimed for its darkly comic script as well as its fantastically nuanced performances from Stiller and relative newcomer Greta Gerwig.
The other film out this week in a month of slim pickings is the latest romantic comedy starring Amanda Seyfried. With Letters To Juliet comes the premise that people write letters to the doomed fictional lover Juliet and Seyfried is one of the volunteers answering them to inspire their authors.
News: Top news is that Sherlock Holmes 2 has an officially scheduled release date in time for Christmas 2011. Whilst the plot details are still being kept under wraps, the leads Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have both been confirmed to appear with the general opinion that the next film will fixate on their struggles against arch-villain Moriarty. Scheduled to be facing off against Sherlock Holmes 2 is the recently announced sequel to Valentine’s Day entitled New Year’s Eve and the latest film in the Mission: Impossible franchise.
In slightly strange movie news the marketing machine behind Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight Saga, has come up with the ultimate accessory to go with your t-shirt and poster. No, we’re not talking about Twilight toilet roll, but the Eclipse Mastercard. That’s right; soon eager fans will be able to get their hands on pre-paid debit cards with their favourite character on them. Makes you wonder what they will be trying for the fourth film.
News & Listings: The series finale of Britain’s Got Talent aired over the weekend, with acrobatic dance troupe Spelbound crowned as the winners, and street dancing duo Twist & Pulse coming in second place. If you’re already going into Talent withdrawal, America’s Got Talent is starting up this week on ITV2 (Thu, 8pm).
The final series of Big Brother begins this week (Weds 9pm, Channel 4). Will the series stem the decline and go out in a blaze of its former glory, or will it die a sad, lonely death?
Ending series: The Junior Apprentice airs on both Wednesday and Thursday this week (9pm, BBC1). In Thursday’s episode, the final of the series, the young candidates must attempt to win £25,000 from Lord Sugar for a new business by designing a new brand of bottled water. Also ending is detective series Luther on Tuesday (9pm, BBC1), with the maverick detective being forced to trust two unlikely allies, and the first season of brilliant American comedy Modern Family (Thu 8pm, Sky1).
Pilots and new series: The second of two programmes in BBC3’s pilot series air on Thursday in the form of drama Stanley Park (9pm) and comedy Dappers (9:30pm), written by the writer best known for penning the film version of Mamma Mia! It also stars Being Human’s Lenora Crichlow in one of the lead roles – she has a charming screen presence and is always worth watching.
A new series of Mary, Queen of Shops begins this Tuesday (9pm, BBC2) with the formidable Mary Portas tackling a cake shop whose owner doesn’t seem to want to change anything.
