American Pie
Friday, 18th March 2011
  • News

- Transformers star Shia LaBeouf has been attached to a film adaptation of Horns, a novel written by Joe Hill. Son of prolific horror writer Stephen King, Hill has also had his other novel snapped up for a possible big screen adaptation, entitled Heart Shaped Box.

- The American Pie series of movies is set to get another sequel. Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy and Jason Biggs will reportedly be on hand to give the long-running film series a fourth instalment entitled American Reunion.

- Liam Neeson is currently in talks to reprise the starring role of the 2008 thriller Taken in its planned sequel. Taken 2 will once again be produced by Luc Besson, although there were doubts earlier this week concerning whether Neeson would return due to scheduling issues. These appear to have been resolved.

- Columbia Pictures has purchased the rights to create a film adaptation of Josh Fouer’s bestselling novel Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything. The film, like the book, will explore the nature of memory.

- Richard Linklater, director of A Scanner Darkly (2006), has his eye on helming a remake of the 1964 film The Incredible Mr. Limpet. Though the original took place during World War II, the new film would update the setting to the present.

  • New Releases

- Submarine

The directional debut for Richard Ayoade (best known for playing Moss in The IT Crowd) is a comedy drama that follows a 15-year-old boy (Craig Roberts) from Swansea attempting to lose his virginity and keep his parents together. Maybe not the most original premise in history but it has received glowing reviews across the board and is almost certainly one to watch.

The Lincoln Lawyer

- The Lincoln Lawyer

Matthew McConaughey plays Mick Haller, a lawyer offered a case defending a businessman’s son against charges of rape and attempted murder. However, things go wrong and it is soon revealed that there is far more involved in this case then meets the eye. It’s apparently not very original but still entertaining and has therefore received generally good reviews.

- You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger

Woody Allen films always used to be something to celebrate, nowadays though they are generally lacklustre at best with the occasional exception to the rule. Unfortunately, this latest London set effort is not one, with film failing to amuse critics, earning it generally negative reviews.

- Route Irish

The latest from acclaimed British filmmaker Ken Loach (Kes, The Wind that Shakes the Barley) follows the life of private contractors returning to Liverpool from Iraq. Expect a very well made, touching and quite brutal drama that critically has received very good reviews though arguably is not up there with the director’s best work.

- Chalet Girl

Romantic comedy following the titular Kim (Felicity Jones), a former skate boarder who gets a job at an exclusive chalet and takes up snowboarding. Of course, she learns life lessons on the way and falls in love. Surprisingly, this has gained decent reviews despite the fact that the premise sounds terribly clichéd and director Phill Trail’s previous film was multiple Golden Raspberry winner All About Steve.
