Sunday, 8th May 2011

This is a special week at the York Student Cinema as thanks to Roses we’ll be screening five, rather than our regular three, films with hard hitting boxing drama, animated fun and much more...

  • Biutiful - Monday (7.30pm), week 3

From acclaimed director Alejandro Gonzalez Innarritu (Amores Perros, Babel) comes a startling tale of redemption. The film follows Uxal (Javier Bardem in an Oscar-nominated role) as he attempts to overcome his problems before the imminent death his senses. Dark, mysterious and deeply intelligent - this should not be missed.

  • Never Let Me Go - Thursday (7.30pm), week 3

Based on the multi award-winning novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go tells the story of three people growing up in an alternate England where a tragic fate awaits them. As it progresses, tension and turmoil create an intelligent and moving piece, starring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightly.

  • Tangled - Friday (7.30pm), week 3

This critically-acclaimed Disney animation tells the tale of Rapunzel with the traditional mix of songs, laughter and memorable characters. Tangled makes for a very entertaining fantasy ride that follows in the best tradition of the world-renowned studio.

  • The Fighter - Friday (10.30pm), week 3 [Sponsored By Roses]

This academy award winning drama tells the story of boxer Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) a boxer struggling against his family and the odds to achieve greatness in the ring. Featuring a brilliant cast including Christian Bale and Marissa Leo (both of whom won Oscars for their roles), this is a tough, intelligent and very well-made film.

  • Ali - Saturday (7.30pm), week 3 [Sponsored By ROSES]

Will Smith stars as perhaps the most famous boxer in history in Michael Mann’s (Heat, Collateral, Manhunter) searing biopic that follows his exploits in and out of the ring. From his glorious sporting success to his friendship with Malcom X, this is a film that gets to the heart of a true icon.
