This week at the York Student Cinema we have a wide range of great films including our first documentary in two years, the Oscar-winning and almost universally acclaimed film The Inside Job. Yet if that doesn’t take your fancy, we also have fun romantic comedy in No Strings Attached and the wild plains of the Americas in the Coen brothers' brilliant adaptation of True Grit.
The recent banking crisis may not sound like most appealing subject for a film but this is definitely one worth watching. A winner of numerous awards, including best documentary feature at this year’s Oscars, this is a fascinating and riveting watch looking at just how widespread responsibility for the disaster went (all of which is held together with a voiceover by Matt Damon).
Academy award-winner Natalie Portman stars alongside Ashton Kutcher in this romantic comedy about friends whose originally purely physical relationship eventually becomes much more. Directed by Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) this should be a highly enjoyable and yet rather different romantic comedy.
Nominated for eight Oscars, the Coen brothers’ superb adaptation of True Grit is an enthralling and highly exciting western. Young Mattie Ross (Academy award-nominee Hailee Steinfield) hires Rooster Cogburn (Academy award-winner Jeff Bridges) to hunt down her father’s killer (Josh Brolin). They embark on an epic journey across the Indian nation to find him with the additional help of Texas Ranger LaBoeuf. The result is a fascinating journey, leading to a brilliant and blistering finale that you won’t easily forget.
