This week at the YSC, we go across the world with three vastly different critically acclaimed films. From Australia, we have superb, dark and brutal crime drama Animal Kingdom; from much closer to home we have the joys of Submarine whilst the week is finished off with Johny Depp in animated lizard adventure Rango.
This superb Oscar-nominated crime drama follows a ruthless family of criminals struggling to stay out of jail and out of the morgue. Yet when threatened from within, their tight knit group starts to unravel violently. The result is a fascinatingly dark tale of confusion and despair in this unforgettable claustrophobic crime thriller.
Hailed by many as one of the most original and enjoyable British debuts in years, Richard Ayoade’s film follows the exploits of a troubled, cinema-obsessed 15 year old as he struggles to grow up and cope with the pressures of life. The result is an intelligent, honest and deeply moving comedy quite unlike anything you have seen in a long while.
When a pet chameleon (Johnny Depp) is stranded in the middle of the Mojave Desert, he begins a bizarre adventure when he inadvertently becomes sheriff of a small town and has to uncover the spirit of the west, encountering many strange creatures along the way, in what is a highly enjoyable and rather different animation that might just surprise you.
