Oven-baked chips

Oven-baked chips
Tuesday, 17th March 2009
At this point in the term, I realised I was slowly running out of food. Low on money and nearly resorting to stealing food from my housemates' cupboards, I was daunted by the prospect of having to eat tinned tomatoes for the next 3 days in a row. Searching my paltry supply of food for possible nourishment, I realised there was one thing I could make - homemade chips.

Whilst those fortunate enough to afford a nice meal out this week may spend their money on overpriced oven-cooked chips, making your own is far cheaper. After baking in the oven, they'll be just as chunky, crispy and delicious as the ones you'd find in a pub or restaurant. You only need three main ingredients and can add extra flavour with different types of seasoning if you'd like. And of course, if there's anything you lack, you can always sneakily 'borrow' your housemates stuff.

Ingredients:

  • 3 potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1cm pieces
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Optional ingredients: Try paprika or chilli flakes if you want some spice or generously sprinkle your chips with cheddar cheese.

After peeling and chopping the potatoes, boil them in hot water for 10 minutes.

Coat the chips with olive oil, then sprinkle the salt and pepper, as well as any additional ingredients over them.

Heat the oven to gas 9 and bake the chips in the oven on for 20 minutes, remembering to toss them occasionally so they cook evenly on both sides. Enjoy!
