No need to starve...

Supermarkets
Spoil
Sunday, 23rd October 2011
The food and drink section of The Yorker usually entails recipes, but to follow recipes you need food. As fresher’s fortnight draws to a close, chances are most fresher’s food cupboards are running bare from the supplies left by the ‘rents (save the 20kg bag of pasta, which will be there all year), and Costcutter is aptly cutting a nice chunk out of your budget. So we decided to dedicate this week to giving you a guide to the supermarkets and food shops around the university.

Morrisons, Foss Islands

Most students supermarket of choice, as it is quite cheap and generally good value. The bad news is that it’s not situated on a major bus route so it’s either a long walk back with heavy shopping, or taking a taxi (this usually costs about £6 to main campus, so worth it if there are a few people sharing).

Sainsburys, Foss Bank

A similar size to Morrisons, but unfortunately further away, hence not many students tend to shop here.

Asda

A newly opened supermarket, just round the corner from Morrisons and Sainsburys (for the York-initiated, it’s where Netto used to be). Unfortunately for an Asda it is quite small, but still has a good range of fresh meat and fish. It seems to be the cheapest of all the supermarkets, but you have to balance that against travelling there if you don’t live nearby.

M&S

In the centre of town, so easy to get to by bus. Very expensive for regular shopping (it’s not just any food, you know...) but good for treating yourself occasionally.

Monk’s Cross

Monk’s Cross is an out of town retail park, which has a large Asda, a Sainsburys, an Aldi and an M&S Simply Food, as well as several High Street stores. Several buses including the 55, 13 and 20 routes run to Monk's Cross. Sainsburys and Asda are both large stores with clothing and homeware as well as food.

Tesco Express

Situated right in the centre of town (just around the corner from the main bus stop to campus), this is quite handy for getting shopping home on the bus. It is a small store but they always tend to have plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and a wide range of tinned and frozen foods too. Rumour has it there is a larger Tesco at Clifton Moor, and another in Acomb, but many students have yet to find these distant lands.

Aldi & Iceland

Two good stores for those on a tight budget, they are situated next to each other on Fulford Road. Closer than most other major supermarkets, although it can still feel like a long walk with heavy bags of shopping.

Convenience stores

As well as Costcutter on campus, there are several other convenience stores close-by; Co-ops on Hull Road and Broadway, Spar on Heslington Road. They do tend to be quite expensive for regular shops, but they’re handy for one off things that you forget to buy elsewhere.

Country Fresh

A fabulous little greengrocers on Heslington Road. Always well stocked with a wide range of fruit and vegetables, and other fresh produce. Very reasonably priced, too.

Rafi’s Spicebox Situated on Goodramgate in town, this store is a must-visit if you like spicy food. They offer ready made curry-packs, allowing you to make curry easily, also stock a wide range of chutneys etc.

So there it is, you no longer have to starve, or live off of Costcutter’s microwaveable pizzas. We’ve all been there, it’s a dark, dark time. Step out into the light.

Seven words: Home Bargains. Clifton Moor. Number 6 Bus.

Or if you're not feeling adventurous, an unmentioned and closer store is the Osbaldwick Sainsbury's Local, convenient for Badger Hill, Osbaldwick and parts of Tang Hall. It's surprisingly cheap for some reason. And avoid the Tang Hall Lane Co-op. It will make you think Costcutter is cheap...
