Southampton’s attempt to make it five wins out of five in the Championship was unsuccessful as they lost narrowly away to Leicester City. The Foxes raced straight out of the blocks and found themselves 2-0 to the good only for Saints to pull one back six minutes later. Southampton striker Richie Lambert found himself scoring at the wrong end of the field to put the away side 3-1 down at half-time and despite David Connolly’s fourth goal of the season in the second half, the newly promoted side were unable to maintain their thoroughly impressive start to the new season.
At the other end of the table, Doncaster Rovers will be mightily relieved to have claimed their first point of the season. The South Yorkshire side were heading for their fifth straight defeat until Hayter’s equaliser against Bristol City put a stop to the rot. Despite the end to their successive run of defeats, the present season is looking increasingly ominous for a side who already find themselves 3 points adrift at the bottom of the table with a bleak goal difference. Brighton are another team who have come up from League One and who have caught the eye this season. They sit pretty in first place with 13 points whilst their fellow south coasters Southampton sit close behind in second place with 12.
In League One MK Dons won again in order to ensure that they stay top. They beat Stevenage by one goal to nil. Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United have also started the season well and find themselves in second and third respectively after both picked up all 3 points this weekend. The talking point in this division however is the abysmal start made by Leyton Orient who are in a very similar position to the aforementioned Doncaster Rovers. The O’s find themselves bottom of the pile with 0 points after their most recent defeat at home to Carlisle and Orient fans will be wondering where the club can go from here.
The action from League Two this weekend saw all-conquering AFC Wimbledon brought back down to earth with a 4-0 thrashing by Macclesfield Town. AFC Wimbledon had been sitting pretty just outside the play-off spots, in their highest ever position on the football ladder under their current name, but now find themselves sitting in mid-table with a satisfactory 7 points from their first 5 games. Sorry Plymouth lost again as their complete collapse shows no sign of recovery. The ‘Green Army’ have seen their club relegated from the Championship and League One in the last two seasons and as it stands their football club will be heading out of the Football League unless something drastic changes over the coming few matches.
Our local team, York City, played on Friday night away to Fleetwood Town in the Blue Square Premier. After a rather uneventful 0-0 draw, the Minstermen take up third position in the table only three points behind current leaders Wrexham. All can take much heart from this start to the season.
