Perhaps the most visually unusual of the hotels on this list, this is your chance to sleep in the head of what is possibly the largest beagle in the world (wooden beagle, that is). A two bedroom Bed and Breakfast at the side of the road in Idaho, “Sweet Willie” the beagle has a smaller companion next door, making the site even more unusual to passers by.
This one’s a bit closer to home. Although the hotel itself isn’t that unusual, it has a museum attached to it, which centres around the original trellis gated Otis lift dating back to 1927. The Living Museum documents the restoration of the hotel and history of the local area.
Underwater hotels are becoming all the more common and so are perhaps not considered unusual anymore, but this initially looks just like a hut in the middle of a lake. This, however, is just the entrance. The accommodation is underneath in Lake Malaren. Guests are taken out by boat and left, so this is perfect for the ideal isolated break, but if you’re more interested in luxury, you can arrange for meals to be delivered daily by boat. Now that’s room service!
This hotel, constructed entirely of ice and snow, has to be rebuilt every winter season, which is not mean feat for a hotel with more than 80 rooms. Similar ideas have appeared elsewhere, such as Quebec, but Sweden remains home to the original ice hotel, and the company responsible have since moved into constructing Ice Bars too. It is normally open December-April, during which period the sun rarely rises above the horizon, and guests have strong likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights. Pretty cool (sorry).
Three themed hotels located close to the Walt Disney theme parks in Florida. Restaurants, bars and even rooms in each of the resorts adhere to the appropriate themes, right up to the piano shaped pool in the music resort.
If you’ve ever fancied a night in jail without the incriminating consequences, this hotel may be for you. It used to be the well known Charles Street Jail, and many of the 300 rooms still have the low ceilings, however the images of the lobby suggest an entirely different air of luxury.
Of course, there are plenty more that should have made it onto this list but didn’t. Next time you’re looking for a procrastination tool, type ‘unusual hotels’ into the internet-it’s a minefield (and yes, somewhere out there, there probably is a hotel on a minefield)!
