But before I go, I’m going to offer five more light-hearted epic university moments.
6. Amazing outfits. Much laughter. And great company, despite the lack of coherent memories (just a feeling of general awesomeness).
It’s got to be a night in Ziggy’s.
Earlier in the term, I wrote about my very first Ziggy’s experience. Worried that this was a fluke, I went back again. And again. And yes, while I’ll admit that like any place, a good night is dependent on more than the location – and I did have some not-so-good nights there – easily my best night out at university was had in the worst nightclub. My friend and I dressed up (she more so than me) and hit the town in the only way we know – the fun way. We danced, we laughed and we had the time of our lives – no guys, no pressures and certainly no complexes.
So thank you Ziggy’s! I don’t think such a night could’ve been possible anywhere else.
7. Number seven on my list has got to be playing hide and seek in the Quiet Place. At three in the morning.
This has got to be an essential part of the Derwent experience, and yet I only discovered it this term. Here we have a proper maze-like (in the dark) garden, right on our doorstep – it would be a crime not to use it.
Akin to these games, are the late-night/early morning wanderings of campus and the often philosophical – or incredibly silly – conversations that these produce. Going out isn’t everything, and so often I’ve had a great night just chatting to a good mate out under the stars. Lying in the Quiet Place, it can almost seem like the middle-of-nowhere. The peaceful atmosphere is the perfect antidote to the stress of university life.
Until a car comes along the road next to it, of course, but we can’t have everything.
8. Number 8? Has got to be the society experience. Best way to summarise this, apparently, is by “stash”. For those of you not up-to-date with this vocabulary – I wasn’t until fairly recently – “stash” is merchandise.
Now, I joined rather a lot of societies in Freshers’ Week. Ergo, I have a fair amount of “stash”. But it isn’t just the fact of having a ridiculous amount of hoodies/polo shirts – it’s the sense of belonging that really makes a difference. When you wear a hoodie with a logo on, and maybe your name or nickname, you can be proud of your involvement. A YorkSport hoodie, for example, gives you pride in your achievements, but also reminds you of your team, your club and your friends.
9. Which leads me to greatest moment number nine: Bryony Holleran.
Not that she’s a moment, but I mean, of course, all the friends I’ve made this year. Not only are they all legends for putting up with me, but they’re also some of the best people I could have hoped to know. I was terrified, on coming to university, that I would find it difficult to meet people. That I wouldn’t find anyone who I could have fun with.
I needn’t have worried. I found them – and had an epic time doing so. Without these people – and I don’t need to name names, you guys know who you are – my first year wouldn’t have been what it was. I feel like I’ve known you for years and I hope I do for many years to come.
10. What to put here?
Absolutely everything.
Nuff said.
Stash is brilliant. So, as I hear, is Bryony Holleran. And Ziggy's. In fact, the whole list.
Since when has merchandise been called stash? Since never. Good list otherwise.
#2 Have you ever been to Derwent?
It is true that "stash" is used in Derwent, though I don't know about elsewhere on campus
Wasn't one of last year's yorksport pres candidates or college sport co-ordinator candidates called stash? For the Merch reason
I think Big D should be added to this list
I agree with commenter #6. Your costume last night was legendary
