It’s another cold and blustery February in York, so all of the students who have blown their heating budgets on nights out will be happy to know that, once again, another spectacular musical is coming to warm our hearts. This year, the University of York Central Hall Musical Society brings Sweet Charity to the stage.
The story is set in 1960’s New York, where the young and optimistic Charity works as a dance hostess in the Fandango Ballroom. The plot follows Charity’s tumultuous love life as she juggles the affections of three men – the adulterous Charlie, the exotic Vittorio, and Oscar, the accountant.
Charity’s fluctuating affections pave the way for some grand scene changes, taking her from the sleazy dance hall to elegant clubs, and even a fairground – and the producers are sure to work wonders with those stage directions (where did they find an actual street lamp last year?)
The sexed up story line, paired with some dynamic, risqué choreography lead by Dance Soc Co-Chair Sarah Betteridge, and some very shimmery costumes, guarantees fun, laughs, and good times.
Directed by Michael Slater with musical direction by Gavin Whitworth, the production also features the acting, singing, and dancing talents of Tom Rogers (last year’s Tony from West Side Story) and drama barn darlings Alice Boagey and Jethro Compton.
Sweet Charity has all the makings of a glitzy, raunchy, and probably just the slightest bit camp Broadway production, well worth £9 (or £5 for concessions) – a rewarding and exhilarating way to pass a few of those long weekend hours. The show is running at 7:30 this Thursday through Saturday. Be sure to pick up a ticket – at Your Shop or online at www.sweetcharityyork.co.uk - to this massive campus event.
