Preview: Prophetess Libuse at Friargate Theatre

Prophetess Libuse
Tuesday, 13th November 2007
As the evenings draw in and you start to regress to the kind of childhood signifiers like wearing mittens, toasting teacakes and huddling round a mug of hot chocolate (and if you aren't doing these things, you should try them, immediately) you might want to try the ultimate winter warmer - the nice family trip out. Of course not all of us have our families close to hand, but if you can extend the boudaries of your heart to include your housemates as a surrogate family, then you could recreate the evening out atmosphere at a slightly dark collection of Czech fairy tales.

Started by York Uni graduate Oliver Jones, the Rubber Duck theatre company have been putting on children's shows from their base in York since 1994. This is their most ambitious production yet, involving puppetry, shadow screens, poetry and a brand new score, and follows sell-out shows of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr Fox and The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Quote Come to an evening of enchanting fairytales where prophets, fairy spirits, ghosts and talking animals will lead you through the origins of the medieval land of the Czechs. Quote

The fairy tale, or pohádky as they are known in Czech, is a central part of a Czechoslovakian Christmas, and is full of the magical creatures and surprising events you would expect from the genre. With this production Rubber Duck are giving you the opportunity to look into the folklore of another time and place, and the chance to take a winter's journey right on your doorstep...

Prophetess Libuse runs at the Friargate Theatre, Little Friargate, York from 21-23 November. Each show begins at 7:30pm, tickets are priced at £7.50 for adults and £4.50 for children and concessions, and they are available from the venue box office on 01904 613 000 or the website.
