Derwent College was opened in October 1965 as part of the first stage of the University's development.
The College building is located near to Heslington Hall and Heslington village. It comprises study bedrooms for 249 undergraduates, 26 graduates, and staff flats, together with seminar rooms, staff offices, a dining hall, snack bar, bar, Junior Common Room (JCR), Senior Common Room (SCR) (used by staff and Graduates), and other facilities. It is a short walk to Market Square, the Library and Student Services. The College is home to the departments of Politics and Philosophy.
In addition to its residents on campus, Derwent College serves residential locations at Eden's Court and all non-resident members of the College.
At the head of the College is the Provost, who has responsibility for the character, discipline, well-being and development of the College and for co-ordinating and representing the views and interests of its members, assisted by the Vice Provost, College Dean, College Tutor, Facilities Manager and College Secretary. This structure is reinforced by a pattern of committees.
The College Committee meets twice a term to discuss matters of interest and concern to the College, with representation from the College Staff, the Junior Common Room (JCR) Committee , the Graduate Common Room (GCR) Committee, and the Senior Common Room (SCR) Committee. Each of the Common Rooms run their own affairs and organise a number of social and cultural events during the year.
