The complete arts guide, for week 9
Starting this week is Illuminating York, an annual festival celebrating the many distinctive features of the city using beautiful cutting edge lighting techniques. This year's events kick off on Friday, with 'Evoke', an incredible sounding interactive light display on the front of the Minster, where electricity, rapidly growing roots or electronic marbles will grow up or tumble down the face of the Cathedral, controlled by the voices of the public. If you want to see how shouting, singing or even praying will affect the graphically animated colours the installation runs from 6pm-11pm until November 3rd. Other events a running throughout next week, so check out the website for times and details.
Also opening this Friday, but in a slightly warmer environment, is Michael Moore's latest tirade against an aspect of American society. In 'Sicko' Moore turn his sights on the US Health Service, finding easy targets for criticism and, more surprisingly, finds much to praise in the NHS. Judgements are mixed on the man himself, the recently released 'Manufacturing Dissent' - questioned his methods and, lets face it, he doesn't seem like the kind of person you would want as a friend, even if he does quest for truth and justice. However, his films are eminently watchable, and, as long as you don't allow yourself to be swayed too heavily, this looks very entertaining.
For something a little politically lighter you could try a little trip underneath the cinema, to City Screen's Basement Bar on Tuesday. This week's highlight from their schedule is a gig by local Zeppelin-esque rockers 'The Buccaneers'. With a strong local following and enough riffs to raise the roof (impressive when you're in a basement), if you think little important happened in music after 1974 then this could be the evening for you.
Inspired by the theatricality of classic rock? Well this week gives you the chance to transfer that desire to the stage, as the auditions for Sweet Charity, this year's campus musical, begin. The singing and acting auditions are on Monday and Wednesday, with auditions for dancers on Friday. Sweet Charity follows a few weeks in the life of 'taxi dancer' (a dancing partner in a club paid by the minute for a dance) Charity, as she falls in and out of love. The uni musical is a fantastic event, with hugely successful productions of West Side Story and Fame! in the last two years, never failing to draw a sell-out crowd. For more information check out the website here.
Finally, for the guys, and a few girls, this Monday is a momentous occasion. The birth of a new standard in anything is a great event, jet travel, the telephone and the compact disc - and the release of a new Pro Evo has no less importance. Prepare not to see your boyfriend for a few weeks...
