Who is Nightline?

Nightline Flat Window
Monday, 17th November 2008
Written by Aaron Berry

Aaron Berry, Nightline's public face, has been widely involved in Nightline. Here, he discusses this week's plans to raise the profile of the university's confidential listening service.

Having used the service as both a caller and as a volunteer, I can safely say that Nightline has been a big part of my whole university life.

The service has always been helpful to me; from popping in at 2am on the way back from town for a fix of tea and biscuits to calling up for some information. Perhaps more importantly I’ve always known that there’s someone to listen to me when I needed to talk.

This week is Nightline is holding its Awareness Week. The aim of the week is to increase people’s understanding of how the service works and how we can hopefully help them. There is no point in the service if students don't know who we are and what we do.

In today’s society there is still a stigma attached to asking for help. The phrase “a problem shared is a problem halved” has been erased from our minds and we feel that we should deal with everything alone. Nightline wants to help break this stigma.

Nightline is based on a system of complete confidentiality so volunteers remain anonymous and no records are kept of callers. This means that anyone who uses the service can be assured that what they say will remain confidential.

However it may also have the drawback of making the service seem a bit mysterious. It’s thoughts like these we are trying to dispel. Students should be able to see Nightline as a safe place to share their thoughts. This week will be a chance for everyone to get to know Nightline. We’re aiming to raise our profile on campus to encourage more students to use the service.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Nightline will be taking over Vanbrugh Stalls from 12pm till 2pm. Our public faces will be giving out condoms, information, and answering any questions you might have about Nightline.

We want to be more involved with colleges, so that more people can benefit from Nightline’s service. So on Monday evening we will be turning up at Goodricke Games Night.

On Thursday we will be signing up new volunteers at the Student Action Fair. New volunteers are always needed in Nightline, as without volunteers our service can't run and ultimately we would have to close.

On Friday Nightline is holding another open flat, where people can come in all day to look around, have a chat, or talk about something that is bothering them. Sometimes people are scared to come in during the night because they don't know enough about us, so we hope that letting people come in during the day will take away any mystery from Nightline and make people more likely to come to us.

As well as our appearances throughout the week Nightline will be at Rave D on Saturday night. We'll be handing out condoms and information about Nightline - just to let people know that there is somewhere they can come if things are tough or they need a break.

Hopefully people will appreciate what we're doing and we will make an impact on campus.

Nightline is a student-run listening, information and sexual health supplies service, open every night of the university term from 8pm to 8am. You can contact Nightline by phone, on 01904 433735; by email at nightmail@yusu.org or by dropping into the flat in Goodricke D Block.
