02:19 Signing off for good now. Thanks to everyone who gave us an interview, podcast or even just a photo. We hope you have all enjoyed our coverage and please let us know what you thought to it. Signing off, The Live Blogging Team
01:54 Just in: Presidential candidate Matthew Freckleton tells the Yorker "gutted that I didn't win, but glad that Tim's won. Anyway, if all goes to plan, I'll be working for an MP next year". That's exciting!
01:50 Thanks to Ben McCluskey (deputy editor), Marie Thouaille (ex-editor), Rich Simpson (webmaster), Alex Cockle, Harriet Evans (deputy blogs) and Bryony Holleran for their help! Well done to all YUSU nominees! Watch this space for post-election updates. Yorkerlove from Fiona (Editor)
01:44 Journey "Don't Stop Believing" accompanies Tim's celebration. What an end to a long night! Tim says "Thanks to all the candidates, that was damn close!" Yeah it was! Also, Hutchings seems to be accepting defeat gracefully.
01:41 Tim Ngwena re-elected President!
01:39 Rory Shanks offers The Yorker a rare interview :)
01:37 President about to be announced! Tense much?
01:35 Jason Rose comments on his election campaign.
01:34 Fusion models and wannabe campus celebrities Robin Kinchin and Boyang Xiao both support Ollie Hutchings to win President. They think their mere presence on his campaign team will be enough to secure his victory... Arrogant much?
01:32 Whilst waiting for the Presidential results, The Yorker catches up with all time Yorker fan and former Socs and Coms sabb, Rory Shanks, stay tuned for the interview.
01:29 In his speech, Dan tells the crowd: "Good morning! I really can't tell you how surprised and happy I am to be standing here in front of you. Let's make this a good year". Defeated candidate Sam Daniels is among the first to congratulate him afterwards.
01:28 No surprises in Goodricke, though... Dan Walker got 349 votes compared to 77 for Chris, 53 for Sam and 14 for RON.
01:27 The college breakdown for this position was quite interesting. Despite taking three colleges - Alcuin, Derwent and Wentworth - Sam Daniels was eliminated before Chris Etheridge, who had a steady level of voters but didn't win in any colleges.
01:25 Which member of The Yorker team finds Dan Walker sexy? Hmmm.
01:23 Dan Walker is the new Democracy and Services Officer. Yorker reporter Harriet expresses surprise!
01:19 Democracy and Services up now - lots of cheering!
01:13 Tension is building, it really is. Trust me.
01:11 What do you think of our graphs guys? Not to blow our own trumpet, but we're quite proud of them. Are you liking the podcasts, too? Let us know please!
01:11 Just two results left to be announced, Democracy & Services and President.
01:11 The final round of voting for Malkin and Scarlett finished with 815 votes for Luke, 1004 for Nick.
01:09 Now for the big question... will we be out of here before 2am?
01:05 Nick Scarlett elected for Student Activities. He celebrates his victory with a number of hugs, Charlie Leyland and Joey Ellis among those congratulating. In his speech, he thanks Rachel, Luke and Katy for running great campaigns and being so friendly.
01:03 Student Activities up now, Scarlett is looking nervous!
01:03 Speaking with David Levene.
00:51 Democracy and Services candidate Sam Daniels is here with his twin brother Ben (great name!) The resemblance is, perhaps unsurprisingly, remarkable.
00:50 Sam Asfahani has just won the vote for York Sport President. He got A LOT of cheers as he took to the stage where he said, "Thank you to all the campaigners who did all the hard work". He also thanked competitor Rob Newton for being a "great person to campaign against."
00:49 This just in: Big Bird was the infamous Ollie Lester! Apparently he doesn't have an "elections night" drinking game though; sad times.
00:41 Epic fail on Rich's part, he confused someone from Nouse for Laura Bo. Well done. Stick to the code, Rich, stick to the code. Apologies Nouse.co.uk!
00:40 A slightly tipsy but just as keen Scott Bryan tells Fiona "I wish there was some sort of a betting agency for elections because they would make a killing right now with presidential candidates being so close. They would make a FOOORtune!" Oooof Scott, looking forward to your comments at the end of the night!!
00:35 Presidential candidate Roberto Powell seems quite relaxed tonight; he tells us "the election process is all but over now; I'm just focused on having a good night with my boys".
00:29 Not to discredit Laura, but the general reaction to her victory seems to be one of shock. Are we in for more surprises tonight?
00:27 Quote from Laura's speech: "Peter, my hat's off to you, you're an amazing person... I'm really, really happy about this, I'm thrilled to represent you".
00:26 Oh my. Laura Bo is elected Welfare Officer in a thrillingly close election. Andrew McIlwraith withdrew, but Peter Warner-Medley was a close second, with just 18 votes separating him and Bo in the first round of voting. Sensationally, Bo and Warner-Medley drew in James College; Bo won in Alcuin, Goodricke and Vanbrugh, whilst Warner-Medley won in Derwent, Halifax and Langwith.
00:22 Doorsafe employee and Fusion 'beast' model Ollie Moran told The Yorker "it's been a safe, friendly evening." I should hope so too! This is hardly a subversive event...
00:21 In the Courtyard JCR area, the announcement of each round is greeted by "oooohs" and "aaahs".... It certainly doesn't feel like student apathy down here!
00:19 David Clarke, successful Environment and Ethics Officer tells Ben "I feel very privileged to be able to do this for a second year: it's one of the most important things I've done at uni." Commenting on his unsuccessful opponents, he added "Robyn and Verity have run a great campaign; I'll be stealing some of their ideas!"
00:17 Tim Ngwena votes for YSTV as the best media outlet...but check it out for yourself!
00:16 Fiona resorts to unconventional reporting techniques to get the scoop for The Yorker readers. In a cosy toilet interview, Student Activities candidate Rachel Hesselwood enthused "I want to find out now!" She reckons Nick Scarlett will win but that it will be very tight. She adds that she's spent the whole day in the library - not sure how she could concentrate with such an exciting event tonight.
00:09 Our system for graphs doesn't like Round #4 unfortunately; in the final round of voting, Humphrys got 1121 votes and Rose got 826. A valiant effort by Jason but he couldn't quite stop Ben from staying on as a Sabbatical Officer for a second year!
00:06 Ben Humphrys is elected Academic Affairs Officer, reaching the quota after four rounds of voting. He's thrilled to win but hasn't prepared a speech; he thanks everyone and tells us we're "legends". Nice!
00:02 Luke Malkin, running for Student Activities against 3 other candidates, is waiting anxiously for the results. He tells Fiona how much he enjoyed campaigning. "The role of YUSU is to talk to students - going round accommodation blocks allowed me to do this". We'll find out who won in 40 minutes and counting!
23:57 Apparently American Football is the best sport... Richard "MP3 King" Simpson interviews York Sport President Candidate Sam Asfahani
23:49 The Yorker team has just been enjoying some sexy time with Big Bird. Who is he/she? I haven't seen that much enthusiasm since the production of High School Musical!
23:44 Matthew "Frecks" Freckleton, Presidential candidate gets chatting to Rich about his campaign
23:44 Nell Beecham and Tom Martin have been elected LGBT Officers. Tom says, "We cannot believe we won, we couldn't have done this without you. We love both so much!" Moving stuff!
23:33 That fox seems to be turning a few heads. In the penultimate results at the end of this busy night, Ollie Hutchings will be finding out if his policies have had the same effect...
23:33 Janey Stephenson and Charlotte Philips, are the newly elected Women's Officers. Janey told The Yorker that in her opinion the other nominees, Peter Saul and Mark Pickard, had handled their campaign badly and were very offensive. According to Janey, Pickard's motto is that 'it's better to be hated than unknown'. "In that respect, he's succeeded" she commented.
23:33 An interview with Ollie Hutchings...
23:24 Peter Warner-Medley, Welfare Candidate, says that a big A4 poster is better than a hundred smaller ones... "Big and Clear"
23:21 The results for Women's Officer will be announced next... Lewis says the position was "arguably one of the most controversial this year". I daresay he has a point. I'm told the male candidates, Mark Pickard and Peter Saul, have decided not to attend.
23:20 More campus celebrities to report. Ex-AU President, Joey Ellis, is here. The big names are out in force tonight.
23:18 David Clarke has been re-elected Environment and Ethics Officer, defeating Robyn Heather and Verity Hill by 989 votes to 723. We'll get Rich to put a pretty graph up after he's done interviewing Peter Warner-Medley.
23:17 Aside from the excitement surrounding the candidates and results (which by the way continue to pour in), there is a buzz amongst us ordinary folk. The alcohol must be starting to sink in now because people are starting to dance in LN/028. Elections fever!
23:15 What is it like to live with a candidate...? We speak to Rachel and Pippa who live with Nick "Captain Jack Bauer" Scarlett
23:15 Nick Scarlett, Student Activities hopeful, comes to say hi to The Yorker livebloggers, he says, "by now, I just want to KNOW!" He adds, "Ollie's scarf is... inte-rest-ing."
23:09 Peter Warner-Medley has come to visit what he terms "The Yorker corner", he's left his bag and will come back for a quick interview in 5 minutes! Stay tuned, kids!
23:05 Tom Martin, LGBT hopeful tells Fiona "personally, this whole event is terrifying, but fun! I just want to do the funky chicken and win!" According to ex-editor Amy Benziane, Tom is really sexy and can to the Macarena at double speed. Perhaps that will be the subject of the next Yorker videocast?
23:05 Stephen Kenney has been elected 21+ Officer! He thanks everyone for voting and says "Hopefully I'll do a good job for you".
23:03 The Courtyard's music is providing the attendees with an atmospheric interlude. More results on the way...we promise!
22:57 Chris Young, YUM Officer, offers his views on YUM and his campaign.
22:56 Ellie Kuper Thomas speaks to The Yorker
22:56 Tony Richards and Stephen O'Ryan are elected Entertainment Officers. Lewis says he hopes they can organise a better event than the one taking place tonight; I'm pretty sure he called Stephen "Patrick" too. Tony says he's flattered to be elected but notes the spotlight is very bright.
22:52 GSA President Matthew Glover commented on the strong turnout tonight. Accompanied by GSA Academic Affairs officer Kieran Alden and Services officer Michael Kirkpatrick, the three expressed their desire to improve relations with YUSU. Graduate students make up 24% of the student body and have recently become much closer to YUSU. Thanks for your support guys!
22:47 Academic Affairs candidate isn't too confident of winning, and tells The Yorker that he's looking to enjoy the night more than anything. He reckons Ben will win it; he says he thought it'd be tough running against Ben from the moment he found out he was running. He added that he's sure Ben will do a good job if he's elected.
22:46 RAG Officers just announced. Uncontested candidates James Croyden and Jonathan Hare beat RON. They told the crowd "thanks for all your support, thanks for voting. They have big boots to fill after the success of Helen and Zoe!
22:39 Just saw a couple of people from St. John Ambulance here... we'll let you know what they're here for as and when we find out.
22:37 There are bouncers everywhere tonight making sure that no one gets in without paying their £1... I just had a bit of a mission getting to the toilet.
22:35 Ben Humprhys speaks to Richard Simpson about his campaign.
22:35 Luke Sanford and Suzy Dodd have won the position Campaigns Officers. They thank everyone for voting for them.
22:31 Caught Democracy and Services candidate Dan Walker by the bar. I asked him about the exit polls; he says the polls are only indicative, but it was quite nice to be in the lead and has eased his stress a little. He was particularly excited by the 24 percent lead as he's a Jack Bauer fan.
22:28 Tony Richards, uncontested candidate for ENTS, tells The Yorker, it's been a fun campaign and that he wants to help colleges run events by using a more "hands on approach". He is hoping Chris Etheridge succeeds in the running for Democracy and Services.
22:25 Sam Westrop, newly elected NUS delegate tells the Yorker "The NUS is an overly political organisation that is not representative of student beliefs. It is dominated by the far left and its association with the Respect Party, whose financers candidates have called for the death of homosexuals, is outrageous!" Strong stuff there from him.
22:23 As noted by our graph earlier, Mandi Madavo and Winnie Amoaku have been elected Racial Equality Officers. After some trouble getting on stage, Mandi and Winnie thank everyone for voting; Mandi says "We're going to do really great things with this opportunity".
22:20 Ollie Hutchings, who I should probably remind you topped the exit polls for YUSU President earlier today, has described his emotions to The Yorker quite simply as "heart in mouth". Last year he was on Tom Langrish's campaign team, in opposition to Tim Ngwena, so stated that a sense of deja vu is in the air. He admitted that the feeling of devastation following all the hard work, on that occassion, was a bitter pill to swallow even as a supporter. Just imagine how he's feeling right now!
I might add that Ollie has praised Ngwena's efforts this past year, but he is obviously determined to take over the responsibility. We'll soon see...
22:15 David Levene and Sam Westrop are both elected NUS Delegates after a second round of voting. David isn't hear to give a speech; Sam was very brief, saying "Thank you very much. That's all".
22:13 Media whore Scott Bryan tells Fiona how nice it is for him to take a night off from the media. He can't wait to see what happens "as egos fall after a fortnight of campaigning. Also, I hear this is going on until 1.20! Thank God I'm off work tomorrow!"
22:10 Academic Affairs Officer Charlie Leyland is also wearing an "I love Tom" t-shirt... apparently the ex-Sabbs (or in her case, current Sabb) have been planning this for a while. Charlie says they're paying tribute to Tom "because he's a legend and they love him". Former York Sport President Alex Lacy will not be here tonight.
22:08 Chris Young has been elected YUM Chair! Lewis praises the work of Chris' predecessor, Anna Bucks; Chris thanks his "fan club" for their support (there are some very vocal supporters here tonight) and says he hopes he can uphold York's brilliant media standards.
21:59 Our resident interviewer Richard Simpson has a chat with Stephen O'Ryan, who is running with Tony Richards for Ents Officer.
21:58 Ex-Sabbs Rory Shanks and Matt Burton are here; they're paying homage to former President Tom Scott with "I love Tom" t-shirts, complete with a picture of Tom. Unfortunately Tom won't be joining us tonight as he's in Newcastle. Shame, it would've been nice to see the Mad Captain one more time!
21:58 Sam Westrop, running for one of the four NUS delegate positions has only one threat - RON. Only Sam and David Levene have been nominated for the positions. Sam commented "I'm looking forward to discovering the result of my competition against RON: he's an outrageous opponent".
21:57 University Senate Rep, Graeme Osborn, who ran uncontested, has won, in his acceptance speech he said "Thanks to everyone! I'm looking forward to representing you on the Senate."
21:55 Fiona has just spoken to campus celebrity Ollie Lester. He hopes either Tim Ngwena, Ollie Hutchings or David Levene win. Chances are one of them will win Ollie! He recommends we come back in a bit when he's had some more to drink. Girlfriend and RAG enthusiastic Charli is very excited!
21:55 The Courtyard is quickly filling up and the candidates are appearing thick and fast. Peter Warner-Medley, who is running for Welfare, is feeling a little anxious to say the least telling The Yorker that he's "nervous, nauseous, borderline sick at the back of his throat." Pretty much sums up the atmosphere here, but don't let that put you off from popping down!
21:49 Richard finally gets the multiple-audio file bug working and speaks to Nick Scarlett, running for Student Activities.
21:46 Former editor Amy Benziane, who is on Peter Warner-Medley's campaign, tells The Yorker: "it feels scary to be on the other side this year -- as a campaigner rather than a liveblogger!" She adds "I'm going to try and have a good drunken night whatever the results may be." See you later, Amy!
21:38 Fiona has just spoken to Tim Ngwena. He says he's not worried about the exit polls because they're equally as close as last year; the polls represent 100 votes out of 4,800. He noted that there are 40 times more votes to be considered!
21:35 Chris Etheridge, Democracy and Services canditate, told The Yorker he is feeling encouraged but says we shouldn't "read too much into the exit polls just yet!" Sounds as though the excitement has gripped him and he's clearly hoping that the past weeks of early mornings and tiresome work are made well worth it later tonight.
21:33 Richard Simpson sits down and speaks to Suzy Dodd about her campaign.
21:25 Former Societies and Communications Officer Sam Bayley is in attendance. Will he be joined by any more ex-Sabbs?
21:13 Just ran into Student Activities candidate Nick Scarlett; he promises to join us later after he's had a few drinks. He'd also like to let it be known that he loves Cheryl Cole (or is it Cheryl Tweedy?)
21:11 The doors appear to have opened and The Courtyard seems to be filling slowly but surely. Should be on for a good night.
21:07 It's worth noting that the exit polls are are based on a random sample of votes from the first 24 hours of voting. They're not always accurate, as current President Tim Ngwena knows better than anyone; he was predicted to lose to Tom Langrish last year.
21:05 Ben McCluskey speaks about the Elections..
21:02 The exit polls were announced earlier this evening, and reveal some interesting predicted winners. Ollie Hutchings is predicted to win President; he leads Tim Ngwena by 6%, with Roberto Powell in third. Ben Humphrys is predicted to win Academic Affairs Officer, and Dan Walker is predicted to win Democracy and Services Officer. Nick Scarlett is predicted to win Student Activities Officer; Laura Bo is predicted to beat Peter Warner-Medley to the position of Welfare Officer by less than one percent. Last but not least, Sam Asfahani is predicted to win the election for York Sport President.
20:44 We are LIVE! Tonight, Editor Fiona Lavelle, Deputy Editor Ben McCluskey, Technical Director Richard Simpson, former Editor Marie Thouaille, and Alex Cockle will be bringing you the 4-1-1 on the 2010 YUSU elections, including quotes, photos and charts!
20:32 Richard, our technical genius, is playing with coding. Apparently it's like the Matrix... he doesn't even see the code any more...
Auto-update please! The way Nouse does it is lovely
