Feeling festive? Cocktails mightn’t be the first thing that spring to mind when you think of Christmas, but here at The Yorker, we’re going to change your mind with these (vaguely) Christmassy-themed drinks.
Now, as making any new exciting cocktails usually means a trip to the supermarket to pick up all types of unusual liqueurs or other bizarre ingredients, we’ll forgive you for only ever having attempted Sex on the Beach. Which isn’t very festive at all. So here’s the easiest and tastiest Christmas Cocktails that won’t end up in a stressful trip to Costcutters.
To make a Classic Snowball, you’ll need lemonade, some lime cordial and some advocaat. Pick up a bottle for about a tenner, or do the true student thing and go for a Tesco own-brand for roughly five pounds. Two parts advocaat for one part cordial, and top up with lemonade. Done! Serve over ice and enjoy.
An unusual but tasty concoction is my own invention- The Crushed-Up-Cookies-With-Coconut-Rum. While the name isn’t that original, it does taste quite quirky. Crush up a handful of chocolate cookies, add a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream, a few splashes of milk, and a little hot-chocolate powder for good measure. Blend, sieve out any too-chunky bits of cookie and add a shot of coconut rum (I used Bali, available at Costcutters). Suggestions for a more inventive name on a postcard, please.
Want a winter warmer? Opt for this very easy (it’s not cheating!) recipe, go for your standard hot chocolate, and add a shot of Baileys. It’s usually on offer in the shops this time of the year, and for even more variation, plump for the Mint version. Serve with a mince pie and in front of a fireplace for instant festivity.
Or, if you truly cannot be bothered, why not sod the trip to the supermarket and go straight to town? Slug and Lettuce have a great range of festive-themed cocktails, often at two for one. Vodka Revolution has two excellent limited edition winter cocktails- my personal favourite is the Twinkle Berry. And as a devoted lover of Dusk, I swear by the Milky-Bar Kids there, and that’s slightly themed. Sort of.
So whether you curl up in front of a cheesy Christmas special, or are getting ready for a end of term social, give these a go, and let us at The Yorker know if you do any better! There’s a reason they say “Merry” Christmas, afterall!
