This little place I know

Cupcake
Heaven on a plate

I’ve been walking around campus with one of those I-know-something-that-you-don’t smiles on my face for the past few days. My secret? Nothing to do with housemates bed-hopping antics or lecturers alcoholic tendencies. I found a new cafe in York the other day, and, in short, it’s awesome. I was in two minds as to whether to write this article for The Yorker, as it’s the sort of place you want to keep as somewhere only you know. But, hey, I’m too nice. I’ll only share if you promise to visit though. Promise? Good.

The place I’m talking about is Sooty’s Cupcakery, which opened in December in Castlegate (near Little John’s). As the name suggests, it’s a cupcake bakery and cafe.

Contrary to many similar places, the prices are not aimed at wealthy housewives with too much time (and their husband’s money) on their hands. In fact, it’s very student friendly; all cupcakes are only £1.49 each, generously sized and beautifully decorated.

Best of all, the cakes taste fabulous (darling). Not stodgy and flavourless like some cupcakes, but light and not too filling or sickly. The vanilla frosting is flavoursome without being overpowering-certainly the best I’ve ever tasted. The selection of flavours available varies on a daily basis, so you never know what to expect, but I guarantee it will be good.

Further to the list of reasons to rate Sooty’s, there’s none of this triple-skinny-latte-extra-milk-no-dairy type nonsense that you usually find in such places. Instead, the drinks are straightforward and homely, and again, very reasonably priced.

The staff are really friendly, and you get the impression that they actually care about the experience you have there (hardly surprising, as businesses such as this rely on word of mouth to survive). Nonetheless it makes a pleasant change from the nonchalance of most staff in high street chain cafes.

In short, it’s worth going, just for a peek at the cupcakes in their cabinet. But once you peek, you’ll want one. And once you have one, you’ll want to go back for more. Clever, huh? So next time you’re meeting a friend in town for a coffee, why not forgo your usual overpriced, average quality chain store coffee and head to Sooty’s instead? Sooty’s Cupcakery in now open at 7 Castlegate. Check out their website for details: http://sootyscupcakery.co.uk/
