St Nicholas Christmas Fayre - York

St Nicholas Fayre
Enjoy traditional fayre
Saturday, 20th November 2010
Written by Laura Reynolds

Despite living here in York, often university students end up living in a kind of bubble, shut off from the outside world and only noticing big events when stumbling through town to buy fancy dress for Ziggy's.

But if you're not in the know, you're missing out and this Christmas, York has the perfect solution for gifts, food and general Christmassy atmosphere.

Established in 1992, the annual St Nicholas Fayre has since grown to become one of the most popular and well known seasonal markets in the UK, with thousands of visitors from the UK and further afield flocking to the city every year. Taking over Parliament Street, St. Sampson’s Square, the Coppergate Centre, St Williams College and the Barley Hall, the fayre creates a festive atmosphere throughout the city.

This year, it is set to be as exciting as ever. Running 25th-28th November, it will include a Yorkshire produce fair, a medieval market and an arts and crafts fayre. Special events run on different days, including a medieval storytelling session in the Barley Hall on Saturday 27th November. Throughout the 4 days there will be carol singers and Victorian period costumes, linking the traditional Christmas market to the modern era. Organisers recommend going on Thursday or Friday to avoid the busiest crowds, and if your course has few contact hours, this could be the perfect time for you!

So grab a few friends next weekend and immerse yourself in a real Victorian Christmas. Yes, it may be very touristy, but sometimes being a tourist in the city you live in can be the best type of fun.
