5 ways to save money at a festival

Summer festival
Stock up on cheap sunnies...
Saturday, 12th March 2011
Line ups are being announced all over the place. This can only mean one thing; festival season will soon be upon us.

With Glastonbury, the first big festival of the year, still three and a half months away, this may seem a distant dream for those of us with another term of essays, coursework deadlines and exams to wade through yet. But with tickets going for around £200 a pop, if you’re going to a festival this summer, now is the time to start thinking about ways of saving money once you’re there. Our guide shows you how:

1) Transport - If you are planning to travel by coach, train etc, book your tickets well in advance. Leaving it to the last minute, you risk not only extortionate fares, but also services being sold out. Look at car-pool websites which will undoubtedly have people going the same place that you are.

2) Food - avoid rip off in-festival food prices by stocking up on filling, travel friendly foods such as cereal bars in your luggage.

3) Alcohol - considered by many to be the bare essential of any self respecting festival goer. Most festivals do not allow glass to be brought in, so transfer any supplies into plastic containers before you go to avoid having it confiscated and having to pay the rip-off prices once you’re in there. Some festivals do not allow alcohol to be brought in at all - if this is the case, try to set up camp somewhere near the entrance and store your stash here, making it convenient to sneak back for a cheeky tipple every so often.

4) Cash - withdraw any cash you will need for the duration of the festival before you get there - this avoids the withdrawal fees that will inevitably be charged by any cash machines within the festival site, and also avoids the massive queues that tend to build up around these cash machines.

5) Equipment - buying tents, sleeping bags, wellies etc. well in advance avoid the extra cost of some suppliers putting their prices up in the lead up to festivals, and reduces the risk that they will run out of your size.
