Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
A snapshot of the musical happenings this week:
In typical run-up-to-Christmas fashion, album releases this week largely consist of Greatest Hits/ Live Recordings/ re-releases. So if you enjoy listening to blithering idiots of limited intellectual capacity you’ll be delighted to hear that the Greatest Hits of N-Dubz are ready for your listening delectation. Elsewhere X Factor winner/twerp Joe Mc Elderry has released Classic Christmas, and more likeable X Factor runner-up/twerp Olly Murs has brought out In Case You Didn't Know, to be found playing in a Starbucks near you.
Aside from the sort of thing you’d probably buy for your nan (see Il Divo – Wicked Game, Adele - Live At The Royal Albert Hall, and Take That – Progress Live), this week sees some good output from the folky end of the music industry, with the third album from AA Bondy, Believers, getting its UK release. The alt-folk of the Alabama born songwriter is ever enchanting and understated, with more than a hint of melancholy. We highly recommend lending your ears to opening track, ‘The Heart is Willing’.
O, Devotion!, the debut album from Liz Green, is also released this week. A lilting folk style with influences of chanson, jazz and blues and unique vocals (sounding almost world-weary in their maturity), this is a debut effort of huge promise. Currently touring, be sure to catch her in York’s very own Stereo on December 8th.

This week, The Yorker wants to take you to a gay bar! Well, erm, this is York after all, so such establishments are few and far between, but head on down to Fibbers tonight (Wednesday 30th) for a set by Electric Six, that is sure to be dangerously shocking. Additionally, the venue plays host to The High Llamas on December 3rd and The Pineapple Thief a week today; the latter group are said to be a cross between Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Floyd and Elbow.
Duchess welcomes Phatfish on Friday, who are the very definition of Christian pop music: their set provides an eclectic serving of pop, funk, folk and rock, and will redefine any misplaced beliefs of religion. Elsewhere, Michael Middleton graces Stereo on Thursday after a self imposed song strike to get some gardening done... Wonder if the green fingers have inspired any new material.
