James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
Following the recent release of their second album, Portamento, The Drums are mid-way through a massive UK tour schedule. The Yorker caught them in Leeds.
The Pineapple Thief, said to be a cross between Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Floyd and Elbow, grace Fibbers on Wednesday. The band has grown from a solo studio outfit to an international gig driven success story. And because we all like obscure trivia, the band name is derived from a little known American film called Eve’s Bayou, in which there is a scene where a young girl steals a pineapple. In addition, the venue welcomes DAN BAIRD & HOMEMADE SIN whose lead singer takes fame from 80s rock group The Georgia Satellite, known for their wild and electrifying live riffs.
Amplifier, Fish and Steve Harley all take to the stage at the Duchess respectively, whilst Tuesday night sees This Town Needs Guns head on down to Stereo.
Overall a quiet week in the York music scene, but bands are starting to wind down for little breaks themselves after all. However, if you’re lucky enough to have a bit of spare cash and free time on Wednesday, head on over to Leeds where none other than Example brings the party to the 02 Academy.
This week sees the release of the usual pre-Christmas haul of Greatest Hits/ Live Recordings/ re-releases, plus a few originals to add some flavour to the mix. First up there’s The Cure’s Bestival Live 2011 (though from what I understand, don’t buy this expecting the old favourites), The Feeling – The Feeling Singles 2006-11, Motley Crue – Motley Crue’s Greatest Hits, and Queen – Queen 40.
Then among the more notable releases of the week, we have Amy Winehouse’s posthumous offering Lioness: Hidden Treasures. Featuring a significant amount of material that was originally never going to be released, we are now being offered a chance to hear a small collection of vaulted songs penned from 2002 right until her death. Reception to the album has been warm, citing Winehouse’s uniquely fragile vocals and her dealing with real demons in each track’s lyrics. Look out for current single ‘Our Day Will Come’, collaborations with Nas, and the provoking ‘Between the Cheats’.
The second album from hip hop artist Wale is also out this week. Titled Ambition, it features collaborations with Kid Cudi, Ne-Yo and Big Sean – worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre. Elsewhere, one of the few truly unique voices to grace the X Factor stage is now available on record, as Rebecca Ferguson releases her debut album Heaven this week. However, from what we’ve heard so far, her excellent vocal qualities are let down by rather bland song writing.
Finally, The Black Keys release their seventh studio album, El Camino, this week. The bluesy American duo have a stripped-back, underproduced sound echoing rock's glory days, and if the widespread success of 2010’s Brothers is anything to go by, their latest effort is surely worth a listen.
