The Week in Music

The Black Keys
Tuesday, 6th December 2011
The Yorker presents this week's succinct guide to goings-on of the musical variety, both locally and nationally. Here you'll find previews of a selection of album releases from the week ahead, as well as a guide to the hottest tickets in town for live music.

News

  • Adele’s broken yet another record, as 21 becomes the biggest selling album of the century, selling over 3.4 million copies (the previous record was for Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black). Insert a pun on 'broken' and 'record' of your choice here.
  • Animal Collective have announced they’re working on a new album *CHEERS AND WHOOPS*. The band say they have 15 songs written and plan to record in January.
  • The National have revealed their writing some new stuff that they might end up scrapping in a few months’ time. Excellent.

Gigs

The Pineapple Thief, said to be a cross between Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Floyd and Elbow, grace Fibbers on Wednesday. The band has grown from a solo studio outfit to an international gig driven success story. And because we all like obscure trivia, the band name is derived from a little known American film called Eve’s Bayou, in which there is a scene where a young girl steals a pineapple. In addition, the venue welcomes DAN BAIRD & HOMEMADE SIN whose lead singer takes fame from 80s rock group The Georgia Satellite, known for their wild and electrifying live riffs.

Amplifier, Fish and Steve Harley all take to the stage at the Duchess respectively, whilst Tuesday night sees This Town Needs Guns head on down to Stereo.

Overall a quiet week in the York music scene, but bands are starting to wind down for little breaks themselves after all. However, if you’re lucky enough to have a bit of spare cash and free time on Wednesday, head on over to Leeds where none other than Example brings the party to the 02 Academy.

Albums

This week sees the release of the usual pre-Christmas haul of Greatest Hits/ Live Recordings/ re-releases, plus a few originals to add some flavour to the mix. First up there’s The Cure’s Bestival Live 2011 (though from what I understand, don’t buy this expecting the old favourites), The FeelingThe Feeling Singles 2006-11, Motley CrueMotley Crue’s Greatest Hits, and QueenQueen 40.

Then among the more notable releases of the week, we have Amy Winehouse’s posthumous offering Lioness: Hidden Treasures. Featuring a significant amount of material that was originally never going to be released, we are now being offered a chance to hear a small collection of vaulted songs penned from 2002 right until her death. Reception to the album has been warm, citing Winehouse’s uniquely fragile vocals and her dealing with real demons in each track’s lyrics. Look out for current single ‘Our Day Will Come’, collaborations with Nas, and the provoking ‘Between the Cheats’.

The second album from hip hop artist Wale is also out this week. Titled Ambition, it features collaborations with Kid Cudi, Ne-Yo and Big Sean – worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre. Elsewhere, one of the few truly unique voices to grace the X Factor stage is now available on record, as Rebecca Ferguson releases her debut album Heaven this week. However, from what we’ve heard so far, her excellent vocal qualities are let down by rather bland song writing.

Finally, The Black Keys release their seventh studio album, El Camino, this week. The bluesy American duo have a stripped-back, underproduced sound echoing rock's glory days, and if the widespread success of 2010’s Brothers is anything to go by, their latest effort is surely worth a listen.
