B Team Competition
The B Team travelled up to Sunderland in Week 9 to take part in their first BUCS competition of the year. The team was also happy to welcome two new members to the team and they all thoroughly enjoyed their first competition. They were up against some tough competition: Sunderland, Durham and Newcastle and came in third. Next term, both teams have three more competitions and including a home match, where we hope to have lots of York students to come and support.
Jodhpurs Jumping Competition
The Jodhpurs Jumping Competition was the culmination of five weeks hard graft, where Riders were working on their confidence in jumping. They aimed to jump an 80cm course of a variety of jumps- from spreads (jumps which are made up of two or more poles and therefore wider rather than just high) to uprights (think traditional jumps which are high). The Jodhpurs girls said they really enjoyed the competition and the clinic and I’d like to say well done to Claire for winning and Ros for being runner up.
Next term we are planning two clinics- one jumping and one dressage. Any riders interested should email into Caroline, our Jodhpurs Rep and she will give you any info you need.
Naburn Gymkhanas
What is a gymkhana I hear you ask? Well, think relay races, sack races and throwing beanbags at things, but with ponies! Everyone gets split into teams and the school (where you ride the horses) is laid out similarly to primary-school-esque end of term competitions, with a start pole and another pole to ride back and forth to. It’s a chance to have some friendly competition whilst trying out all sorts of funny things on horses. Example races are ‘Go as fast as you can there and back’ (a firm favourite), or Ride up to the pole and do ‘X’ (usually involving getting on and off the horse!).
To celebrate Christmas Naburn transformed our normal lessons into Gymkhanas, which everyone really enjoyed (apart from the sack race, perhaps). Since everyone who managed to have a gymkhana enjoyed them so much, we hope to make Gymkhanas a more regular activity.
Club News
In other club news, we are happy to announce we have three new social secretaries- Alice, Issy and Catherine and there is a lesson survey being sent out very soon- riders please fill it in! Hacks are being planned for next term and if anything I’ve mentioned interests you please email riding@yusu.org for info!
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Happy Riding.
