Last Saturday saw the women’s 1st team put up a gutsy fight, only to be denied their winning goal to leave them level with Airdale at 1-1.
With both the captain and vice-captain out through injury, a somewhat depleted team lined up to face Airdale under the temporary captainship of Marieke Hampshire.
York took a little while to find their feet, but some excellent work from Laura Carter around the ‘D’ ensured they maintained the upper hand and the majority of possession, until a fast break from Airdale and a lucky shot wrong-footed the defence and put York 0-1 down.
York retailiated with a string of short corners and some fantastic passing between the midfield, culminating in a cheeky ball from Hampshire into the ‘D’. The ball was picked up by Bella Slator, who scored to bring the score to a level 1-1.
The start of the second half saw York play some true champagne hockey: controlling both the ball and the play with relative ease.
A quick ball in from Katie Wilson went directly to a waiting Jamie Unsworth, whose phenomenal strike crossed the goal-line only a fraction of a second after the whistle had blown. York was denied the goal, gaining little compensation from a short corner which was not converted.
Airdale seized this opportunity and went on the offensive, with goalie Karen Coulton enjoying a round of footsie with an array of Airdale players. However the York defence remained unrattled.
York continued to fight back but ultimately ran out of time, leaving the final score level at 1-1.
