Attendance the key as Goodricke chase the title

Goodricke Legs
Goodricke need some big performances to catch runaway leaders Halifax
Thursday, 24th January 2008
Newly appointed Goodricke sport rep Adam Lewis spoke to The Yorker about bridging the gap from Halifax, and the current state of Goodricke sport.

"We want a better turn out for all sports, as although we're not having walkovers, more competition usually leads to better performance within teams, particularly in traditionally poorly attended sports such as table-tennis and hockey, and especially girls.

"We want to push for people in new events such as rugby 10/15s and also the one day events like Swimming, these are often the deciding factor in who wins the crown. Football 2s also need a big improvement, and this has started by re-trials where the captains have been looking for new personnel"

Goodricke, who currently lie 7 points behind Halifax in second place, can boast some very impressive performances.

"The badminton team haven't lost a match in the past 2 terms, have come top of the league for the past 7 terms. At the club charity tournament every gold medal was won by a Goodricke player.

"Netball 1sts and pool have regained their crowns, and the volleyball team have improved remarkably, with major competition for places there."

But for Goodricke, second place is simply not good enough, and their sports reps are focused on regaining their college sport crown.

"If our only success is regaining the college cup, we'll be happy with that. To all aspiring sports people, stuff the degree and make sure we win this cup!

Quote Stuff the degree and make sure we win this cup! Quote
Adam Lewis

"My own personal aim is to get the college football crown back in my first term of captaincy, particularly winning against Halifax and Alcuin our main rivals. Our badminton team want to continue their domination, with the fixture against Wentworth always very competitive. The netball match against Halifax is usually worth a watch and I would like to see us doing well in our first few games of Rugby, which we did so well in last year, finishing second in the 7s tournament."

Alcuin are going to retain their status as champions on the football field let's be honest. I don't think Lewis has the tactical nouse to outwit Myles Preston.

Preston's copycat 3-5-2 college formation being Preston's tactical wit?

Occasionally, football teams use the same formation! Alcuin's 3-5-2 is based on the personnel that they have, not on copying Goodricke. With the two best wing-backs in college football, and the best midfield three in Edwards, Stratton, and Smith, Alcuin's change to 3-5-2 made perfect sense, and was a huge reason behind their victory over Goodricke last term, and their title win. So hats off to Preston!

I don't think you can claim to have the best full backs when we have Remi and Owen Grafham. Plus it's not like you actually won the title, Preston was desperate for the postponed game to not go ahead in week 10!

Ok fair point on the full-backs but we weren't going to slip up against Langwith. Goodricke have struggled with Eddie Silson being locked out as a uni player but he's eligible to play this term as a non-uni player I hear.

remi and owen grafham are class...id take owen anyday...but roo and dan hydea won us the title last term. simple as that. eddie has been awesome for goodricke, but coxy won the golden boot last term for a deserved reason. well played alcuin.

Just pointing out that this is an article about sports in general not just football 1sts lads!and for the sake of argument,Goodricke are going to dispose of everyone...

What about the midfield trio of High, Oatridge and Ramsden?

An excellent point...but the same rules apply to Oatridge as do to Remi - How many games did he play last term? Having him recover from his injury is a massive boost to Goodricke, but will it be enough to dipose Alcuin and Halifax as the top two college football teams?

Oh, and if the games had gone ahead in week ten then Alcuin would've beaten Langwith anyway...and even if they didn't I expect most people who have written on this thread (Mr O'Shea included) believe that Goodricke would've at least got a point off of Halifax, which would've handed Alcuin the title anyway!

I'm not so sure, I think Alcuin may have struggled against Langiwth in that a lot of Alcuin players would have been playing for uni in that week and no Langwith players would be.

But having said that playing the game in week 10 was unfeasible so take nothing away from Alcuin's title. I'm sure it'll be very tight again this term though.

The title belongs to Alcuin
