James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
The women’s 1sts have had their best season yet, dominating their BUSA league, with phenomenal victories against Durham University 2nds and Leeds University 2nds, which had previously eluded them. They also secured an action-filled 5-1 victory against Sheffield University 2nds, creating an established, well-bonded team which secured York’s position at the top of the table.
York now only need to play their next BUSA games to ensure their victory; the results are immaterial, as they have already stacked up 19 points, with the second place team Leeds University dawdling at 15. They then face the BUSA Plate promotion playoffs, which should be at Sheffield during March, though full details have not yet been released.
The 13th of February will also see the women’s 1sts face arch-rivals York St John during Varsity. This should be a high level game, full of the fight and excitement we have come to expect from the York women. Captain Diana Cowland has said: “We really want it this time. York St John are also pushing for promotion of their league so it will be a real fight, but we are ready for them”.
Players to watch out for in this game include Marieke Hampshire, who is a rock in defence and is always there to support play up the left hand side of the pitch. Also Andrea Pisesky, whose sensational skill allows her to switch play effortlessly around the middle and regularly lead the attack up the pitch. For the glory of goal scoring, Katie Wilson usually playing left forward is one to watch, as she scored a hatrick in her last game and Jamie Unsworth, who steps forward for fantastic finishes on short corners and has the fastest strike in the women’s club.
Overall, the Varsity game remains the one match still unconquered by the women’s 1sts this season, and will definitely be worth a look. A victory there will be the perfect finish for an already brilliant season.
