York were nervous as they arrived on the pitch to play Hull, as it was Hull who inflicted York's only league defeat of the season in the first round of matches. This was heightened by the large crowd awaiting them, who had been drawn by news of the team's impending promotion. However, with all players back from injury, and the whole ladies club to pick from, Captain Diana Cowland was confident that her team could give Hull a game to remember.
The team went out hard from the whistle, and they were immediately rewarded with a goal from Andrea Pisesky, after a fantastic drive up from midfield. They then continued to battle with the defence solidly, holding back Hull’s attempts for a comeback throughout the rest of the first half.
As the whistle for the end of the half was about to blow, York won a short corner, allowing all the players to move forward and face the best of Hull’s defence. A great strike from sweeper Jamie Unsworth was saved by the Hull goalie, but centre forward Karen Wallace was too quick on the rebound, securing York’s second goal, which was thoroughly deserved after an excellent half of hockey.
Shortly into the second half, York won another short corner, which was taken by Pisesky and flew beautifully into the top left corner. However the goal was disallowed, as the ball had not left the ‘D’ before she struck.
York then faced a tough onslaught from Hull, who were determined not to let the game get too far away from them. They eventually won a short corner, from which goalie Cassie Barker saved a phenomenal shot to keep York ahead. The 1sts then went on the offensive and quickly won a short corner of their own. Katie Wilson received the ball and took two shots on goal before Laura Carter managed an excellent finish to put York 3-0 up before the final whistle.
Overall, York had a great game against very decent opposition. Sam Simms took the player of the match award for her great runs from the back up the right hand side, and infallible defending throughout. Yet another victory for York women, and one which has guaranteed them the title and promotion.
