The two swimming clubs now share their pooltime at the nearby Archbishop Holgate's School pool on a regular basis, with a selection of swimmers from each club joining the others' training sessions, taken by Jorvik coach Darren Burchell.
The university swimmers now also have the option of joining the city team swimmers training at a 50 metre pool in Leeds, which, according to Salmon, is "especially useful in the run-up to competitions".
Jorvik Swimming Club initiated this liaison in an attempt to encourage the younger swimmers to continue wih the sport into adulthood. Burchell deems the unversity's new involvement wth the city team as "inspiring" to the younger swimmers, who are challenged more as a result, and are encouraged to follow the example set by the universty swimmers by getting as much out of swimming as possible, for as long as possible.
The two clubs hope to work together even more closely in the near future, and are already discussing the option of York University swimmers competing for the Jorvik team in the 'open' age group.
This scheme has already had a notable impact upon the university swimming team's performance. In the recent BUSA short-course competition at Ponds Forge pool in Sheffield, the swimmers broke 5 university records. The team hope to keep improving at this rate, and, with the help of their new coach and extra training sessions, hope for an exceptional performance at the upcoming BUSA long-course championships next month.
