York’s women’s 1sts still managed a decisive 2-0 victory over Sheffield last week with only 10 players, despite some rather unsporting behaviour from the opposition.
York travelled away to Sheffield with a depleted team, as many players were already out through injury. However, they needed a victory to boost team morale and confidence, following a shock defeat the previous Saturday.
The ladies came out strongly in the first half, with some excellent play across the pitch and frequent use of the wings. It wasn’t long before Andrea Pisesky scored York’s first goal of the match, putting them 1-0 ahead.
The second goal came after some great play, and was well worth waiting for. Katie Wilson received the ball at the top of the ‘D’ and had a quick shot, straight into the bottom left-hand corner. York was now a secure 2-0 in front.
York continued in excellent form. However, play from Sheffield deteriorated rapidly, with monstrous stick tackles and some very rough play. Right back Sam Simms, also Hockey Club President, was chasing a Sheffield player down the left wing when she was viciously tackled from behind, badly damaging her ankle. York were therefore left with only 10 players, with Katie Wilson stepping in to take her position.
York managed to hold their lead for the remainder of the match, through some great skills and play and without being drawn into any further disruption on the pitch. The final score of 2-0 reflected a valiant performance against the odds, with the player of the pitch award going to Katie Wilson for her fantastic goal and her awesome performance out of position In defence.
