Sneddon – For those who don’t know a lot about Saturday, could you tell everyone about what is happening?
Gledhill – Well the day for us starts at 6am with us driving down to Loughborough for the competition. We are competing in the contemporary dance section which is a mixture of ballet and jazz.
Ndebele – The actual dance lasts about 5 minutes and is three routines fused into one.
Sneddon – How many of you are taking part?
Ndebele – There are ten of us in the contemporary routine, with a few more coming for the tap dance competition. I did not know everybody i was dancing with when I first started but it has been a really good way to meet friends.
Gledhill – Yeah definitely, there is a good mix between the years and with the amount of time we spend together, strong friendships are formed.
Sneddon – This was going to be my next question, how long have you spent training for this?
Gledhill – Well, auditions were held last term and rehearsals started straight after Christmas with two hours a week. However this has been steadily rising in recent weeks, we’re doing 12 hours this week. That on top of actually choreographing the dances means that this whole competition has taken up an awful lot of time.
Sneddon – 12 hours in one week! That is a lot.
Ndebele – Yeah, it can be painful. I often pick up bruises through it but its all worth it ion the end.
Gledhill – Definitely, its not easy. Some days while choreographing it would take hours to think up a few steps, but it makes it all the more enjoyable to be dancing your own moves.
Sneddon – With all the routines being new, does it take a while for everyone to get them right?
Ndebele – Most of the dancers have experience of picking up moves, be it through the society or from outside dancing, so its not too hard.
Gledhill – One of the biggest problems has been getting all the dancers in the same place at the same time to rehearse, but its all coming together now.
Sneddon – So, the big question – Do you think you can win?
For us, this is the biggest competition in the country so winning it would be amazing
Gledhill - For us, this is the biggest competition in the country so winning it would be amazing. We finished second last year in the hip-hop category and feel we are stronger at contemporary this year.
Ndebele – It will be nerve wracking before and i really hope we do win. Even if we are victorious, it will still be a bit sad as we all have really enjoyed this and it will leave a bit of a gap in our lives.
Gledhill – Yeah, it will be sad, but will free up time for other things. Winning will make all the time and effort put in seem that bit more worthwhile.
Good luck girls!
