Carter implied that all clubs have been reasonable in their requests, except one who "looked to be asking for a huge increase." This was going to be denied by the AU until it was realised that it was "an error in the spreadsheet."
The largest part of each clubs budget will generally go towards travelling to away games, with either coach hire or petrol costs being expensive on a weekly basis. Some clubs have to hire venues which, for them, makes up a sizeable percentage of the budget.
Fees for instructors or coaches have "always been budgeted for", but this year will see a major drive to get more coaches at clubs, "this year we are trying to make little cuts elsewhere to make a big difference in another. We will, as always encourage students to qualify as coaches too to help out within the club."
This can only be positive for university sport as outside help will help good teams become great teams and should lead to better individual players. There is only so much the captain of a team can do without having coaching qualifications, professional coaches have more drills and insights into training and thus should help players progress onto the next level.
One team who thought they had progressed onto the next level was the football 1st team who finished top of their league this season. This should have ensured promotion but due to geographical reasons, they must face a playoff with Newcastle on Wednesday to see if they go up.
Carter describes their predicament as "unlucky" and that it "would be a massive shame for the lads if they do not win on Wednesday, but it shouldn't take anything away from the fantastic season they have had, and they should be proud of themselves."
Even if they are not victorious on Wednesday, "they will obviously still have Roses to look forward to" and "whichever league they end up for next season, they will have a hell of a lot to play for."
whichever league they end up for next season, they will have a hell of a lot to play for."
Another issue is still up in the air with regards to the next sporting season, that of college rugby. This past Saturday saw a one day 10s tournament on 22 Acres. "There were a couple of hiccups with regards to the organisation of the event but this is a one-off event that we should look to build on for next year and learn from any mistakes made."
