Jo Carter - Week 10

Jo Carter
Current AU President, Jo Carter
Wednesday, 12th March 2008
Last weeks YUSU elections saw Alex Lacy beat Chris Collinson in a closely fought battle to become AU President.

"I'm happy that Alex has been elected. He ran a good campaign and has worked hard to get a good idea of what clubs want from the AU", said Carter who obviously had to go through the same rigours of the election process last year.

"He has already been in touch with some good ideas and interesting questions and I am confident he will do a great job" added Carter.

In his campaign Lacy promised such things as free fitness classes, discounts on sporting products, improvements in facilities and more support for elite sport. When asked if Lacy could deliver all of these Carter said that "To a certain extent I believe that policies are just a reflection of your vision of sport and priorities - whether or not he achieves all of his policies his main ethos is to have a long term vision for the AU, which is something I have been thinking about for a while now and I think it is very important."

With the promise of more support for elite sport, York can expect to be going further and further in the end of season BUSA knockout competitions. The most successful team this season, in knockout, so far has been the men's table-tennis 1sts. They have beaten Stirling and Bournemouth to reach the BUSA Trophy final.

This Sunday they play a strong Manchester side who boast some highly ranked players on a antional, not just University scale. The final will be played this Sunday in Sheffield, but as its after term has finished there was some doubt over York's participation.

Carter confirmed that this doubt is now over and that "table tennis will be going to Sheffield on Sunday. Jan, their captain will not be playing as he has to fly back to Germany, but Tom Coleman has managed to get a team together."

Rugby mens and womens also have BUSA games this week and if they both win then the next round is next week, outside of term time. "If both rugby teams win on Wednesday, I am confident that they will play in the next round. Both the rugby clubs are very committed clubs and I know this means a lot to them, and I will support them in any way I can."

Roses is now around two months away and Carter is already getting "excited". She is also "confident we can win - I know it's hard to win an away Roses but I think the clubs are going to do me proud."

Roses is obviously a massive deal for all involved and Carter describes it as "one of the best things about being at York."

This will be Carter's fourth Roses and she has had her own personal ups and downs "winning 12-0 in the mixed 1s hockey in my first year was amazing, missing a penalty flick in the indoor last year was gutting, as well as losing the womens 1s."

This will be Carter's last ever Roses and she has said that she "would do anything to retain the Carter-James trophy (it's even got my name on it!!)."
