James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
Badminton kicked off the day with two wins in the mixed and men’s 2nds. The equestrian 1st team were unlucky to lose but the 2nds rode well to earn 2 points. York dominated the rugby in the sunshine despite the men’s 1sts 22-10 defeat. Over in Blackpool the cricket 2nds were disappointed with their performance and lost in a low scoring match. Otherwise most of the action was in the sports centre where The Yorker team were running between karate, swimming, hockey and squash throughout the day. Laurie Swan was dominant in the squash for York as the men’s and women’s teams won, earning 8 whole points.
Unfortunately women’s hockey were embarrassed by Lancaster. The girls were annihilated 12 – 0 and Jo Carter was obviously upset as she sat alone, a forlorn figure, on the floor of the viewing gallery after the game. The men’s hockey 1sts have just gone some way to avenging this with a 3 – 2 victory. The swimming gala has also just finished here in the sports centre pool, the York men’s team won and the women lost. Captain Steven Knight was happy with the result and his pre-Roses preparations: “Yeh it went well. I’m glad I wasn’t tempted by Gallery last night! Last year I went out the night before Roses and was sick after my two races!”
The atmosphere here is great and we’d encourage you to come over tomorrow or Sunday if you have the chance. Bring suncream, loudspeakers and a crate of beer and you’re set to go!
Speaking of beer apparently there’s an offer on at the campus Spar so we’re off to indulge ourselves then join the ‘athletes’ at the event tonight at the Sugarhouse in Lancaster. We’ll be back (not so) bright and early tomorrow for what is shaping up to be an incredibly close Roses.
