Highlights for York were the fencing, rugby and men’s indoor football. Although the latter was marred by intense hostility from the Lancaster 1st team which resulted in Tom Wilson’s Roses coming to a premature end after losing a tooth and a lot of blood.
Fencing won all events gaining a massive 10 points. In the men’s rugby the 2nds won a close encounter 14-12 and the 1sts did exceptionally well to share the points after a 10-10 draw that could have ended so differently if a last gasp conversion was successful. Women’s rugby also won to make it a great day for rugby.
Tennis earned valuable points with special mention to tennis club president Steven Durrant winning his first match in his 3rd year of Roses’ competition. He lost his first 7 matches but finally won number 8 and 9 today in men’s doubles and singles. “It was pretty special!” He admitted. As for his thoughts on the whole day’s events he said “I’m very proud of the club. I’ve got to revise so no drinks for me though.”
The netball girls were disappointed to lose the 1sts and 2nds games but can take heart from a 3rds victory. The mixed hockey was also a mixed bag, but the 1sts won in a thriller.
Tomorrow was always going to massive but with York in touching distance of winning the first away Roses victory since 2002, excitement will be sky high amongst the York camp. Tomorrow sees action across 7 sports and York will be desperate to wrap up a momentous Roses weekend with victory.
