Carter had high hopes for the elections after the “hugely contested AU President position and the success at Roses”, but these hopes have not come to fruition. It is hard to find reasons why so few people have shown interest in the positions, but the feared work load would have played a part in many peoples decisions as potential candidates may have deemed the position too much work.
The lack of candidates does not do the positions any justice as Carter maintains that they are “vital to the running of the AU". The lack of candidates does not mean the AU will be left with an inexperienced exec and this experience will be important as next years President, Alex Lacy, comes from a non-AU background and Carter describes the exec’s role next year as “crucial”.

Of the 13 nominees, four of them are from the lacrosse club, a fact which highlights a lack of diversity amongst the candidates. Carter says this “speaks volumes” in a positive sense as “freshers see just how great it is to be involved”. She does admit that it is nice to get a “balance of clubs represented” but it was “great to have some representation from college sport and the smaller clubs".
These smaller clubs often struggle to gain new members and improve their clubs but a helping hand can often be a college sport one day tournament. These get new players playing and build up the profile of the sport being played. This Sunday sees a handball tournament and the following Sunday has college lacrosse from 11-4.
The lacrosse tournament was one of Jack Kennedy’s policies as Vice-President and Carter says he has “done really well” in setting it up. The lacrosse club have been “really supportive of the venture” and “with any luck it will be a big success” and “act as a feeder into university level, just as in some of the other sports".
Get involved with the tournaments and who knows, you could be at the AU Dinner (Friday week 9, tickets on sale now) next year receiving the sports person of the year award.
