York Women’s Rugby could be the team to watch this season. Last year the club managed an amazing turn-around from the disappointing 2006-7 season. 2007-8 saw them win all but one of their BUSA matches and emerge victorious from Varsity and Roses.
The team powered through the opening stages of the BUSA shield competition, reaching the quarter-finals. Despite playing the quarter-final match without their captain and vice-captain, York managed a respectable showing, but were ultimately overpowered by MMU Cheshire.
The highlight of the year for the club was undoubtedly Roses. It was clear that Lancaster expected no real challenge from a team who play a league below them, but they quickly realised their mistake as York pinned them in the Lancaster 22 and fought them hard for every phase of the match. When the dust had settled, York not only beat their rivals for the first time in years, but prevented them from putting a single point on the board.
Having narrowly missed out on promotion in the league, York’s aim this year will be to build on the successes of last year and take it all the way to the top of the league. The team has suffered heavy losses from the departure of many of its experienced third year players. In particular, the forwards will need to adjust quickly to the loss of powerful number 8, Ice Asare, and the backs to the departure of top try-scorer, Ruth Laybourn.
Despite these changes, a strong and committed team core remains, led by number 10, Chrissie Leahy as captain. Leahy will be ably supported by the seemingly indestructible scrum-half, Emma Hodgson, as vice-captain. This year’s fresher intake already looks very promising, and if they keep to their formula of teamwork, communication and commitment to good rugby, there is no reason why UYWRUFC can’t continue their winning streak throughout the coming season.
Their season kicks off next Wednesday at home to Hull 1sts but York are already sitting pretty with 3 points joint top of their BUCS Northen 2B league thanks to a walkover last week against Bradford.
York women’s rugby welcomes anyone with enthusiasm and willingness to get a bit muddy, whether you’re a complete beginner trying a new sport, an ex-player looking to get back into rugby, or the star of your school team! The main training sessions are Sunday 12-2 and Tuesday 6-8 (both meeting at the entrance to the Sports Centre), and there will be a fun fitness session on Fridays involving collaboration with other campus clubs (4.15-5.30).
